Do the residents of Cornwall believe they are the only ones who are being priced out of the housing market?

My wife is from Cornwall, just outside of Truro to be more accurate.

I can confirm that it is 'Hot Fuzz-esque' for anyone who has seen the film.

I have on more than one occasion been assumed to be from Essex (I'm inclined to believe that's because of 'The Only Way Is Essex' being a close match to my 'accent' although I was shocked they had television down there) and yes have oft answered the question 'What's London like???'. It is fun completely making up insane anecdotes just for your own amusement.

It does seem like a world within a world down there, they are a bit different, but I have to say although I miss the city it is quite lovely, countrysides, the people and that feeling that creeps in to you of "I think I might start working part time".

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

I suspect that the contrast between the wealthy second home owners and the locals in terms of almost everything is probably far greater than in any other part of the country. With Cornwall in particular seeming to have a local populace who are more tribal than most.

I can recollect once reading that Cornwall was perhaps more akin to Sicily than Sussex in terms of culture.

Not been down to that part of the world for a long time and cannot envisage that changing anytime soon but even on a recent trip to Bristol to do a Uni inspection with one of my kids, it had a very distinct vibe that was different to both London and even the wider SE.

It is quite ridiculous for the Cornish to claim some sort of separate racial purity, since the Cornish have spread all over Britain and the Commonwealth.

I have a load of Cornish and Devonish genes, as do many others. I am related to the Pascoes and Nancarrows of Cornwall and it doesn't get more Cornish than that. Some down there think your family has to have stayed there forever to qualify.

I have always found the people of St Ives very friendly, but then I haven't bought a house there. I'd move to the West, but I'm the only member of my immediate family who thinks it's a good idea.

But St Ives Town Council has claimed this is no longer sustainable as the cost of running the facilities is £135,000, which has been worsened by several instances of vandalism requiring repair work.

Do they think the vandalism is caused by the second home owners and tourists?
I can imagine they need to look a little closer to home.

Bit hypocritical of them really, seeing as they are named after a visitor to the place.

Depending upon your chosen source, she was either an Irish Saint arriving in the 5th Century, or a French Saint who is also the patron saint of lawyers!

Could explain why they're getting a bit legal-ly.

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

Lovely part of the world, my uncle used to live in Carbis Bay, we’re down there next month, I’d quite happily move down there myself but the wife won’t leave her parents

culturally & linguistically Cornwall should really be part of Wales.

rumours of King Arthur being connected to Tintagel ... often overshadowing his Welsh pedigree. Luther Pendragon....'head of a dragon' a Welsh nobleman.

Also, Britanny is culturally close. And has the same problem of Wealthy Parisians buying up all their houses.

I think they should ban second or holiday homes during a housing crisis. I don't really give a f*** for the rich boring Germans/Dutch wanting two weeks in the country denying a family a home. I'm not quite sure exactly how they can differentiate between local people and others though. Discrimination law will overturn this anyway, the council is making a point.

If tourists start shi-tting outside the town hall, that might make them change their minds.

I don’t think they can. In reality what is happening is the rich are migrating outwards. Permanently working from home with the occasional commute to the office will mean the quiet rural areas will become the sought after locations.

Not sure they will like it but it might be worth mentioning to those who can no longer afford to live in Cornwall, they should consider moving to the London suburbs where pretty soon it will be a slum and affordable.

All change please!

I agree. A government should have priorities... and I don't mean their own.
