There is a lot to be impressed by this season, huge overhaul, complete change in playing style, performances, semi of FA cup etc. However, for me the single most impressive thing is the dramatic change in value of the playing squad. The value of the squad on day 1 of the season must have surely risen by at least 4 times to the current value. Mitchell, a product of the academy, having got 2 caps for England and based on the value of the likes of AWB and Chilwell, must be £50m + Guehi bought for £21m and having had a great first season in prem and an England cap must be worth more than double what we paid. Olise, bought for £8m and having performed incredibly with assist, goals and French U21 cap must be worth 4-5 times what we paid. We have the likes of Edouard, Andersen, Mateta and Eze, who are all 25 and under and would have increased in value against what we paid for them. We are getting to the point where, whilst we want to retain as many of our prospects as possible, we can now follow the Leicester model of selling one player for huge sums per season that then funds bringing in several more players that can both improve the team and be sold on for profit until the point that we are in a financial position to retain them and push on. If we can continue to bring in these kind of players, we not only secure or future financially, but give ourselves a real chance at being a club that can genuinely one day challenge for trophies and the top 6. I don't want to lose anyone this summer, however, if selling one of our prospects like Mitchell or Olise for huge money allows us to bring in 4-5 more similar prospects and gives us the time to allow our academy to develop and feed the squad in a few years time, then I'm all onboard. Whilst it's all speculation, if an offer of say £50m came in for Mitchell or £60m for Olise, I would sell in a heartbeat with full confidence that for the first time in forever, we have a recruitment team that would then bring in 3-5 more players with that money that could then develop into players of a similar value. Imagine selling Olise and then bringing in say Carvalho, Isaiah Jones, Djed Spence and a couple of others like Levi Covill or Bella-Kotchap with that money. They may not all make it but if two of them develop over the season to being £50-60m players each, we can then do it all again. The future is exciting as far as I'm concerned!

I was gonna say, I think Mitchell's development has been really impressive. I wasn't entirely convinced by him to start with, but with each passing week he's got better on the ball, better in his positional sense, and generally just quietly got on with his development. Credit to Roy Hodgson for recognising his potential. He crept into the squad as a regular in 20/21, but I gather he was around at the start of 19/20 and it was only a bad injury that meant he only made a handful of appearances that season.

I think the fact that we were quite happy to get shot of Van Aanholt showed how much faith they had in Mitchell. Must’ve given him a massive lift as well knowing we preferred him to an experienced international player Edited by monkey (06 Apr 2022 6.50pm)

The change in the attitude of the press and pundits to the Vieira's Palace is great to see. That has been a transformation. Even though our points tally has been pretty on a par to last season the way the team have gone about it has been totally different and very welcome. Palace are a valuable part of the Premier League not just unexpected visitors who hung around longer than expected. A strong end to the season, try and win the cup, keep the team together - sell none of those valuable players listed above - and see if Chelsea will let us keep Conor fit for the World Cup. The U23 and U18 have been superb too.

And the name missing from most such threads is Douglas Freedman. An overhaul of the playing ethos in a season and half a million quid off the wage bill. A finely tuned radar for talent. We have one of the top Directors of Football in the country I would suggest. Warning, Murdoch media but fair comment [Link]

The thing that I'm most impressed with is that fact that we now have a team of sellable assets. Doesn't mean I want any of them to be sold. But this time last year Wilf was probably the only player that would have commanded upwards of 20mil. Now we have MG, JA, TM, MO, EE, WZ and likely OE and JPM too. The team is absolute light years ahead of the team from last year.

For me it's this really, really weird, unsettling feeling that I actually believe we can score against anyone, at anytime. Like a proper football team, lol. So many years it's felt like going 1-0 down is writing on the wall and at 2-0, well that's the nail in the coffin, but with the performances we're putting out on the field I'm just loving the feeling of always being in matches with our high energy, marauding style. Sadly one swallow doesn't make a summer, and I'm very anxious about next season, but for now, happy days.

Everything mentioned here has contributed to what I think is the most impressive thing - the BELIEF! Palace are now a force to be reckoned with.
I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything. |
