I went to a sporting dinner about 15 years ago and he was the guest speaker. A very funny man he was too. A sad loss of one of cricketing's greats

Just read this in his obituary in The Times: Botham came to the crease. Marsh behind the stumps asked, "How are your wife and my kids?" Botham replied, "The wife is fine but the kids are retarded." Derek Randall once tried to thwart the banter by greeting Marsh, as he (Randall) came to the crease with, "Good morning, Rodney." Randall then kept repeating the same greeting over and over. After a while, Marsh said to Randall, "Mate, this is a Test match not a f***ing garden party!" And the widely-known story of Marsh calling Randall back to the crease in the Centenary Test because the edge from Randall had not carried into his gloves. Randall went on to score 174. Marsh deflected any praise for his action by saying, "It would have been cheating had I not done so. I don't deserve to be praised for not cheating."
