It's taken me until now to watch MOTD and the review of the game because I was so annoyed... and I am 57. 40 years of Palace makes you circumspect, usually immune.

Definitely offside for their 2nd goal. Definitely not a penalty (the worst decision I have seen, given VAR).

As soon as they replayed their goal I could immediately see Firmono was offide and in play so what actually is Paulson doing at that point? Celebrating? When they replayed the penalty shout I could immediately see that the ball was gone, Joto moved towards Guaita and it was a collision. Pawson then spends 5 minutes working the clips hard enough to convince himself black is white and then shoves it onto Friend who hasn't the guts to stand by his decision. To be fair to Friend, by the time you are at the video monitor, the VAR ref has got the clips exactly right to make sure that the onfield ref has to think the VAR knows something he doesn't, i.e. a clear and obvious error.

When as a professional I make errors that are blatant and my fault, I apologise to the client. Why can't we expect the same from these two? If not I suspect we will make Selhurst a place where they are neverwelcome.

And rightly so.

From one old geezer to another, I can see we are like birds on the same twig, as another old geezer on here has often said.

I wrote yesterday saying that, whilst I agreed there was no penalty and Kevin Friend was wrong to award it, I thought folk were being too emotional about the decisions against us.

Liverpool were all over us like a rash in the first half and deserved to be leading at half time. But we came back at them well and played some excellent football. Most of us expected to lose the game, but a draw would have felt like a win and was on the cards before the penalty decision. Their keeper was the difference.

But, I have never read such an overwhelming amount of opinions as I have in this morning's papers that the referee's decisions and VAR were wrong. So, like you say, it should be beholden for them to apologise for the way yesterday's match was officiated.

It would certainly be good to see, although Hell would freeze over first I suspect.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

There is something rotten to the core if you can watch that video over and over (and in slow motion) and still give the penalty.

Is a keeper now meant to step out of the way when a striker is charging towards him?

You were right. Even if the penalty had not been given, you could not have it taken for sure that we would have equalised. So this wrong decision didn't cost us a point, it just took away our chance to get one. Regardless of this I've hardly ever seen such a wrong decision concerning pens especially with VAR.

It's only children who really think the world's a fair place but what binds societies together is that we try to make it fair even if we often fail. We humans have an enormous sense of "fair" - it doesn't really matter how long a queue is, as long as no one tries to push in. Then hell breaks loose.

An apology resets that sense of fairless unless it's Boris style: "I'm sorry you felt that way" or "I'm sorry but..." in which case it just inflames it.

Come on Paulson/Friend - cough up and make friends with SE25 again.

PS. Old Geezer - my twig would need a lot of re-enforcing.

I agree with all of the above and actually find the decision making for the second goal far more concerning than that for the penalty. Dermot Gallagher as an ex ref on Sky gave the impression that whether Firmino was 'active' in the lead up to the goal was a subjective opinion. Stephen Warnock completely refuted that view and said that any player in the penalty box is 'active'. Clearly Firmino drags Mitchell into a position where he has to get close to him, thereby leaving Oxlade Chamberlain free to have an unimpeded shot. For Craig Pawson not to understand that issue calls into serious question his capability as a ref - its really very worrying indeed.

Thank goodness someone got his name right. I was originally baffled by the title of this thread ..

You do have to wonder if Palace were just a pawn sacrifice in the PL ratings race?

I see Dermott Gallagher has said the penalty decision was wrong although he stopped short of agreeing the second goal shouldn’t have stood. Reckons that one is down to a subjective opinion! Personally I’d like my referees to be objective! He was off side and active. Mark Clattenberg says both decisions were wrong!

VAR took at least two minutes to find a way to award Liverpool a penalty and two seconds to decide that Firmino was not interfering with play. Nuff said.

I'm so Palace I don't even know it

Absolutely. I honestly cannot believe that Friend can repeatedly look at the footage and not see what football fans, ex-players, managers, pundits and referees have seen. My impression is that he didn't have the strength of character to go by his initial decision and was in collusion with Pawson to award the penalty. What did they see that no one else has seen? The condemnation of the decision is across the board, and incidents like this bring the game into disrepute. Is the FA paying attention?

We're yet to hear the name of a referee on this thread who hasn't in the past made a catastrophically poor decision against us in favour of a bigger team.

Craig Pawson has only referred that decision because he was the VAR for the Newcastle City game where Fraser got wiped out (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-10326253/Jamie-Redknapp-expresses-disbelief-Newcastle-werent-given-penalty-versus-Manchester-City.html) and no penalty was given and he was heavily criticised. At the time, they said 'it can't be a penalty as Fraser didn't have possession'.

Fine. But neither did Jota?!?!?! And Ederson's involvement in that first one is clearly far worse than whatever Guaita is alleged to have done.

The second goal is awful - there's no question Firmino is offside and interfering.

Pawson surely has to be stripped of VAR responsibility going forward? It's error after error after error and they are all in favour of the title chasing team.
