A lots been said over our inability to defend set pieces but with the inclusion of tomkins and probable training ground tweaking it seems to be improving.I think that criticism by the football pundits of our defence is slightly unjust as 9 premier league sides have conceded more goals and another two the same so our defence is certainly better than most

Tomkins is getting match fit and is helping us in the air which is a good thing.

Get that sorted and we will have an even meaner defence which research proves is the route to success.

we let in 46 goals all season. Three cheers for Butland, Guaita, Mitchell and all the boys. who are your defensive heroes ? i would also tip my hat to our attacking players who had the pace and guile to get back and defend at high speed. Ayew deserves a special mention. And as for General McArthur ? Legend. Edited by PalazioVecchio (24 May 2022 4.15pm)

The same McArthur that that's looked like a man revitalised under Vieira? I don't know what PV's been putting in Jimmy Mac's tea, but I want some, please!

WE started the season with a back four that hardly knew each other and finished with a defence that conceded the fewest we've ever conceded in our 13 PL seasons. Hats off then to Ward, Clyne, Andersen, Guehi and Mitchell for the way they have gelled and enabled us to keep clean sheets in our last FIVE PL home games (not conceded at home in PL since February against Burnley - of all teams).

I don't think our defensive qualities are our best ones and are not the main reason why we conceded less goals than previous seasons. I think the key has been that we have maintained much higher possession stats and kept the ball away from our box for longer. I think the fact that we continue to concede too many goals from set pieces and concede late goals when under pressure confirm the above. It is true that our defenders do not concede possession like the old guard did.

Well he has had a good season when he's played. But the fact is that this season is the fewest minutes he has spent on the pitch in league games

It is worth saying that our set piece defending improved through the season. Vieira learnt. Important.
If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities. |

I suspect this is for 2 reasons: Our defenders are better in open play, where they can watch the game and anticipate vs a massive scramble at seat pieces Because we hold the ball more, we give away less chances
