I just can't believe it! How on earth did Benteke miss that header against Leeds? Wot a sitter! Another two points down the drain. And after the great goal he scored in the previous match I'm wondering if we can ever get the consistency we need from him.....

Such rubbish from you two, our performance improved so much with him when he came on and it is quite obvious how much he's improved under PV, it wasn't as easy a chance as you think because he had a covering defender running across him and their keeper still to beat and he'd be the first to say with his decent form that he should've been at least on target ..our biggest mistake last night was not making subs during Leeds best spell around the hour mark because it was quite evident we needed a change then.

I realised a few years’ ago the only way to cope with watching Benteke is to expect him to miss absolutely everything and to only be surprised when he scores

Agree 100% with Davepalace707, that’s exactly what I do. I never expect him to score, no matter how simple the chance and then when he does score it makes the goal celebration so much better.

Why then, do we persist with him? I really don't understand how he gets away with fooling folk into believing he's a striker. I was underwhelmed when he joined us and I still feel the same. OK, so he's scored a few this season, but he misses too many good chances which is what this thread's about. However, funnily enough, I do agree with Tickled in that our overall performance improved after he came on.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

It's not just the missed chances - his passing is absolutely atrocious and I don't know if I've ever seen a striker with worse movement. Absolutely 0 poaching instincts, doesn't press, has one bit of movement to peel to the back post and hope it gets stood up.. the one time that actually paid off yesterday, he missed a free header from 6 yards. Did anyone notice the shot from the edge of the area? That's half a chance for any competent top level forward to at least work the keeper - he put it a mile wide. When are we finally going to cut our losses and just get rid?

Unfortunately whilst we see little glimpses of quality from OE, he isn't playing well enough to keep Benteke out of the team.

I think yesterday was a bit of an exception - we weren't good enough to beat Leeds press without Andersen and Macca (two of our best/most composed ball players) so ended up having to play more direct, which suited Benteke and meant he was quite effective. I don't think there will be many other games we end up playing as direct as that, so I don't envisage that kind of impact every game. Edouard just looks a better player to me - better touch, better feet, better movement and a better finisher - will take a bit of time to settle/adapt, but I don't see how he doesn't end up a better option. If we were to have a 90th min one-on-one to win a game, I think all of us would rather it fell to Edouard than Benteke.

Absolutely shocking miss what in effect was an open goal from 4 yards, that cost is points in the end.

We look much more dangerous up front when Benteke plays, he gives their CBs a tough game. He holds the ball up and creates space for other players. Yes he misses some chances, but he gets in the position to have those chances, which others don’t seem to do.

PV says that Benteke is capable of scoring 10 goals this season. Not a vast amount for the position. But for Benteke, a big increase on the last few years. By my reckoning, Benteke will need to be provided with 100 scoring chances over the course of the season to achieve that number. It's a shame we couldn't compete with Newcastle for Callum Wilson, he would be ideal in our set up.
