For the last couple of years Zaha has been far and away our best and most important player. Seeing a team sheet without his name on it, would automatically make me think we’re certain to lose.

We also rarely had set partnerships, CBs were different every game, CM was rarely settled.

Now alongside Zaha, I’d add in Anderson, Guehi, Gallagher (and Eze) to that group that would be sorely missed.

But it begs the question, who is most important to us?

At the min I’d go for Gallagher or Anderson.

I like this topic. And I think that any new manager coming in (other than the mercenary type of manager) would see the danger in being over-reliant on one player. So I'm very happy that we've corrected that for the immediate benefits and the future when the time cometh for Wilf to leave, or decline in ability. Also takes some pressure off of him too.

I think where we'll get to, sooner than many had expected, is that we are not over-reliant on a few flare players, and have a united and cohesive squad that understand how to play the press from front to back. The overall quality has gone up for sure, and a few new players and philosophy has dragged everything up a notch or two. I also think that we might not have seen our most important players yet, which is also really exciting - Edouard, Olise, Eze in his second season, Hughes. They could all be really important, and match-winning components of this chapter in our history/future.

I dodged the question, and will dodge it a little more. I think PV is most important person in the mix. It's his vision and philosophy. If he goes, the project stalls or disappears.

James McCarthur for me. First name on the team sheet. We were lost without him in the second half of last season.

Yes, an interesting topic MrRobbo, but you can't name two as the most important player! That's a cop out. Although I don't disagree with your two nominees, however it has to be Gallagher of the two you put forward.

I'm with EddieMac, McArthur is immense in the team. Often ignored in MOTM awards etc, but such a solid and reliable team member. As much as we all love to see Wilf in full flight or Eze (and now Olise) glide through defences, James McArthur is for me, our most important player.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

For me too . J Mac is and has been the heartbeat of the side for a few years now . Replacing him will not be easy .

Exactly whilst I love Wilf we have to move away from being a one man team and I think we slowly are.

we definitely are, which is great. My only worry is about losing one of the CB's or Connor.

Would we be able to pass out of the back with JT?

Would we be able to do the high press without Connor (he won the ball for the 2nd goal, and started the press which lead to our first).

We've proved that we can work without Wilf, I'm hoping Hughes will be decent cover for Connor, but CB cover leaves me worried.

I don't think were have ever been a one man team but there was a definite move to get the ball to Zaha at all costs as he was our best forward. One of the differences this season has been the threat we are now offering from the central midfield players which we hardly ever had under Roy ( Loftus-Cheek loan period aside ) Main difference is Connor Gallagher.
When Zaha was out it really interfered with out game play hence why we suffered not only because our best player was not in the team but also we had no replacement who could play that roll. Eduoard showed use he can be that player though i think Olise will also be able to do the same in the not to distant future.
