Anyone shed some light on this for me?

My Grandad, born and bred Sydenham, with Palace close to his heart, always used to call us The Screaming Alice.

I never heard it anywhere else - just him.

Ring any bells with anyone?
Sounds like contrived rhyming slang. Was it just him and his generation (1912 to 1996 and Dunkirk veteran as a mark of respect).

Just asking, thanks.

I have heard it used - I think it was originally the actual Crystal Palace rather than the football club.

My dad used to call them that too. As you say, probably contrived rhyming slang

My mate, a bouncer at Fulham calls us Crippled Alice. Full on cockney. Uses all the slang.

That was used in a newspaper match report headline after a particularly bad showing. I think it was in 73/74.
