No, this is not about Python, but about F1. Did any of you try to watch yesterday's Belgian GP at Spa? It ended as a farce rather than a race. Two laps lasting about eight minutes behind the safety car in the starting grid formation. Well, I've been there several times, the first time 30 years ago when Michael Schumacher made his F1 debut. It's a magnificent circuit, but the weather is notoriously bad. It rains frequently and watching a GP requires a certain amount of stamina at the best of times. In constant pouring rain it's miserable and requires real devotion. To think of all those folk who travelled to watch 20 F1 cars battle it out for an hour and a half and eventually get to see an 8 minute parade is dreadful. Watching Grand Prix these days is a hyper expensive business including the cost of travel and sustenance and no-one gets a refund because it was classified as a race. 2 laps qualifies. I bet there are plenty of miserable folk around this morning feeling cheated by the sport they love.Lewis Hamilton says he feels sorry for the fans. But presumably not sorry enough to cough up a refund of their ticket money from his own vast fortune which he's made from racing. Which he would hardly notice.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

Why can't they simply cancel and re-arrange it. Really made a mockery of F1, actually yes very python-esque.

Genuinely a mockery. I would think they need to change the rules to a minimum 21 laps. At least someone could perhaps overtake.

Logistics mainly. ALL the marshals are volunteers with jobs & don't get paid. So, to get them to do another day(today would be preferred), is not feasible. There is no space left in the calendar to slot a re-arranged race in. I do agree, however, that the race(not that it was) should never gone ahead. Money talks, end of, especially now the Yanks run it.

All the drivers collectively plus the owners are on a massive wage. If the fans have been so let down by the sport not just Hamilton but all of them could easily collectively refund them.

Well now, they've acted quickly, lets see whether these talks are useful & beneficial . . . [Link]

But, at least they've been fast to act as you say eagleman. The F1 organisation did not handle the situation at Spa very well at all. And they know it.

The rules state that if less than 70% of race distance is completed but at least 2 laps have been completed then half of the normal points score will be awarded. I've no problem with the 75%, but surely there should a lot more than 2 laps completed for any points to be awarded. Cruising round for 2 laps as happened yesterday hardly constitutes a race.

You DO have a problem with the 75%. It's different from 70%.

F1 is a bit of a joke nowadays anyway and nothing like the fun it once was.

Ecclestone and Ballestre knew how to run F1. It wasn't perfect , by a long way, but progress was always structured and not rushed. Everyone knew what they were doing. The latest offering by the F1 circus looks like it was organised by President Biden.
