Spain played the type of football I'm beginning to loathe. England played in a similar vein.

You know it, possession at all costs so it's meaningless passing back and forth until an opening appears. Meanwhile your opponents have time to organize their defence and make any breakthrough very hard. Passes tend to be directly to the player instead of ahead of him where he could pick up with pace.

I suppose the heat will be used as a reason for this style but I just find it tedious in the extreme.

I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything.

I think there is a lot of truth in it - football has been coached to the point that all that matters at the top level are hard-working, tactical players who can press well and keep the ball all day, but it's rubbish to watch.

Risk-taking, which is generally far more entertaining to watch, is just so much less efficient that top sides aren't as interested.

Weirdly I was watching old highlights of Lampard and Gerrard recently, and my first thought was that you don't see players consistently scoring long-rangers the way they used to, mainly because a long shot is generally the 'wrong' option and in today's game you'd get criticised for taking them on.

I’ve been saying for a long time now, it’s not just palace, but football in general is dull as dishwater a lot of the time these days. Too much tippy tappy sideways or backwards passing while the other team just stands and watches until it’s their turn to have a go.

Teams rarely get stuck into each other anymore, which I suppose has a lot to do with free kicks and yellow cards being dished out as soon as players touch each other.

Wasn't sure about the title of this thread, but having read your first three posts lads, I found myself agreeing with you.

There's no doubt that the spontaneous, natural skills and exciting attacking play has definitely been coached out of today's game. The beach football from Brazil that thrilled us in the past is rarely found today.

Eze, with his cage football background comes close. Just hope our new guy let's him demonstrate some of his natural skills.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

agree - the top six are dull, champs league final was oil v oil, pep's footy is dull, they wait for the defenders to fall asleep then pass, the possession style is very safety first, Klopp and co countered tippy tappy with an ultra intense high press which requires athleticism rather than skill, not everyone plays this way though and the Euros matches have been entertaining by and large - better than Euro 96 which had a lot of turgid cautious games

Lets hope our new manager is, firstly in place when Eze comes back from injury and secondly, still in charge.

I loathe all this starting everything with the short goal kicks to a player in the penalty box and then playing it around at the back. One team at the Euro's started with a defender passing the goal kick to the goalie every time.
Even the cr@p sides like us pass it around for ages at the back like this now.
Give me the good old fashioned punt up field and winning the second ball any day!

I’m with you, give me the Harry Bassett Wimbledon or Steve Coppell way any day of the week. Get the ball forward and fight for it like your life depended on it.
I wonder what the likes of Andy Gray, Geoff Thomas, Vinnie Jones, Terry Hurlock, David Batty or Roy Keane think watching modern players pussying around and standing off eachother

I thought the Coppell football was the most boring of the lot, somewhere in between passing inside your team and route one punts please
