This big 400m long cargo tanker has been stuck a few days now. Loads of ships waiting to get through, and still , perhaps, a few more days waiting. "The captain of the 200,000 ton Ever Given has blamed a sandstorm for losing control of the ship, which is now blocking one of the world’s trade routes." So they also missed a massive opportunity of the headline "Evergreen blocks trade canal. Not since the days of Will Young's 'Evergreen' has a canal been so jam-packed with seamen" The captain should either walk the plank, or go down with the ship. He won't even be allowed as a passenger on a ferry after this.
I disengage, I turn the page. |

Difficult to understand how this could happen today with all the modern navigational equipment at their disposal. I confess the story, and pictures, made me chuckle though. Having been on a few canal holidays I know that it can be difficult to control a long boat on a narrow stretch of water. I've done exactly the same thing as that tanker captain with a 70' narrow boat and been stuck front and back across the canal. Took ages to get free and required assistance from a few bystanders. Needless to say my fellow boaters had plenty of laughs at my expense.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

Evergreen is the company name. The vessel is the Ever Given. It was blown off-course by gusting winds. I believe that all vessels are piloted by the canal authorities.

The price of oil was constantly dropping and certainly not going to ever recover its historical levels of value. Now the oil is blocked in the Suez, the price goes up. Not that states whose sole income is from oil sales would ever manipulate the price.
