Sadly following on quickly from the loss of Peter Lorimer we say goodbye to another big name from the 70s.
I saw him play many times and he was a gifted footballer.

Indeed more sad news.
A very gifted footballer who enjoyed life off the pitch as well.
God rest his soul.

My thoughts go out to all his family and friends.RIP.

He was an entertainer on the pitch. His approach to life was best expressed by the fact his autobiography was called One Hump or Two?

Certainly one of the best - scored one of the best goals I’ve ever seen. That was when we had entertainers on the field :-) he scored one of the defining goals of his career against Ipswich at Burnden Park in April 1979, juggling the ball with his back to goal on the edge of the penalty area before turning, knocking the ball over the onrushing defenders and volleying low into the corner.

Peter Lorimer and Frank Worthington were probably the two footballers of that generation that caught my young imagination the most.

As a kid, I'd try to hit the ball as hard as Lorimer did, studying his technique in a feature that Shoot magazine did, I think, and would try some of the tricks that Frank Worthington came up with.

The nearest I got to emulating either of them when I was older was blasting the ball at short range into my own teammates face and knocking him out, and winning a fedora on the supporters club coach to Sunderland in our Cup run.

I never stopped trying though.

Both have died relatively young. I hope that's the bit I don't end up emulating.

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

That was brilliant but was very late in the season and the Golden Goal had already been decided so it wasn’t eligible.

In their youth, they were fit, highly trained athletes. So I think you'll be fine

RIP Frank - a great player and a true entertainer

Frank Worthington a fine player and a character.

I remember him being called up by England by Joe Mercer, and he scored twice against Yugoslavia.

RIP we don't have characters like him anymore.

A wonderful player, very sad news, himself, Alan Hudson, Stan Bowles, tony Currie and Matt Le Tessier have less England caps put together, than David Batty has on his own, Probably why we have won f**k all in 55 years

“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn

Just read a lovely report in The Guardian about Joe Mercer who brought Worthington in as a player for a series of England matches after Ramsay was sacked. Worthington admitted himself if he had applied himself a bit more he could have played for Liverpool but he was a player in all senses of the word. He was one of the greats of his age.
