How To Play Football - The Rules

We all love to see a game of football played at a fast, end to end, free flowing pace with minimal interruptions and a few decent goals from open play. Today's game is being stifled by laws, rules and guidelines that, I suspect, very few of us agree with.

I started a thread recently about heading the ball because I can't imagine the game played without it. However, I accept that it is potentially harmful so I'll suggest that we ban heading. What if there is an accidental ball on head incident in the box - does that constitute a penalty?

Last night the Wolves keeper, Patricio, received a nasty knock to his head and had to be substituted. This raised two issues. The first being the delayed offside flag which allowed play to continue up to the point of the collision. I hate this rule. The second being how the game deals with head injuries in general. There have been a few knocked heads recently, but there is no provision for a proper off field assessment as there is in rugby. Should there be?

On the subject of rugby, I have watched some of the Six Nations games and cheered what I thought was a great move only for it to be adjudged to result from a forward pass. Illegal. Supposing in soccer, we banned back passes? Would that result in more attacking play? Could it even work? I also like rugby's 10 minutes in the Sin Bin rule for certain offences.

And we haven't started on VAR yet. I understand about the need for consistency, but the application of, say, the offside rule just seems plain crazy when it comes down to fingertips and elbows. Waiting 2 minutes for a decision before we can cheer or boo takes away the thrill of the moment.

Anyway, I've rambled. The purpose of this was to see what changes to the present setup you think would make the game more enjoyable to watch whilst keeping it as safe as possible for, what remains, a contact sport. It'll be interesting to see what concerns you most.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Never a ramble.

My biggest annoyance is how players have no respect for the refs or each other.

Would love to see players in a sin bin or even sent off for arguing with referees.
Likewise, any kind of cheating or acting should be wiped out of the game, not encouraged.

When my son boxes he gets hit but stays on his feet, when he plays football and gets nudged he drops like he’s been shot!

POG, as an ex-ref & assessor, i wholeheartedly agree with most of what you've posted. Things will not change until FIFA, say they can, then UEFA have to agree & then the various national associations along with 'Stakeholders' ie Sky etc.

There are only 17 Laws to footy, hundreds of sub-sections. Now, you mention consistency, that will never happen while you have Humans. Each one is different, each one sees the same thing differently, each one brings a different conclusion.

I, too, watched the Wolves match & IF the Ass Ref was allowed to indicate offside as they always supposed to, i dont think the 'keeper & Coady(?) would've collided & then yet again another player taken off for (imo) an avoidable injury.

VAR has exaspirated the laws mainly because the operators, although current serving refs, are NOT computer savvy as an IT operator is. I dont know what the immediate answer is, for as long as FIFA hold the reins, this wont change any time soon.

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

because a Red Card is quite extreme, most refs are reluctant to use it. it kinda ruins the football match.

The best example : World Cup final, Spain v Holland .

Collina let them all stab each other for 120 minutes.

To improve the refereeing, it should be possible to issue many smaller sanctions.
