I was there. I remember the saints full back (Peter Rodrigues?)hacking down Peter Taylor in the opening minutes. He was our star player then - it would have been a definite red these days. That effectively took Taylor out of the game. There was also the penalty that never was. Jim cannon fouled Osgood outside the box but the ref gave a penalty. It was still a brilliant run. Big Mal with is fedora, all those away games and beating some top teams. Proper Palace - punching way above our weight. I also remember that we went on to screw up promotion out of Div 3 (League 1) that year. However, it did mean that we had the brilliant last game away win at Wrexham which took us up the next season. What an awayday that was...Rachid Harkouk... that's another thread I guess. Edited by Plumpton eagle (03 Feb 2021 1.18pm)

Remember getting the train up from Wimbledon & it was full of Soton supporters, the banter that was flowing was brill & very good natured. All stopped when we got to last stop where the old bill separated us, so we walked up to Stamford Bridge, either side of the road hurling insults at each other & the old bill.
This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |

In rounds 4-6 we were the underdogs which I think suited us. Against Southampton we were fancied to win and as you rightly say, once Taylor had been sorted out - I think by David Peach - we were never really in it.

David Peach scored the penalty after Mick Channon was fouled outside the box. And I won a blue felt Big Mal fedora in the coach raffle to Sunderland. Had it nicked by a Southampton fan after the game outside Stamford Bridge.
Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry. |

Me too, it’s only taken me about 20 years to learn how to do that I had a good look at some of our old stuff that came up, good times. I only went to the Chelsea game and the semi final, mainly because of a Chelsea family member I had to go with., and he got tickets for the semi because it was at their ground
