I'm seriously considering sacking off Sky due to their outrageous price increases and a desire to detach from supporting that ghastly organisation.

Do any of you good people use Freesat? A 1tb recordable box, with a pretty good range of channels and the Netflix, Prime and Britbox apps (all of which I have) for £200. I can't see me missing any other stuff on Sky.

Thoughts?

Good call.

Don't give money, year in year out, to those who hate you.

I gave up on Sky bout 20yrs ago, when they whacked the prices thru the roof(never missed).

I dont use Freesat, so cant comment, ive got BT, but, i got rid of 'Sport' as they themselves upped prices. I only use them here in the UK coz of our mobiles & broadband, got rid of everthing else, tho they have let us keep both our boxes.

In comparison, i pay €60 per month in Spain, just for broadband & phone, my TV was installed with 3 seperate boxes, with total UK tv for a combined cost of €850 & no more to pay, Result.

Good luck mate, tho i here iptv is the way forward.

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

Freesat is great if you cannot access TV through an ariel it's the satellite version of Freeview.

I have a Freeview box which also includes the apps for the streaming companies, sorted.

I’ve had Freesat pretty much since its launch. The Humax box I have currently has the worst EPG I have ever seen; it seems to have been designed by a team of 3 year olds with crayons.

The Grundig box I had previously was much better / clearer. I’d see if you can preview the different boxes before making your choice.

Would suggest IPTV if you have good internet, with a vpn cheap as chips and you would still have all the Sky stuff.

PM me for details.

This has been something I've been considering doing for a good while. For what you get it's definitely far from what I'd call value for money.

I use freesat as I live on a boat. It works great but it is slightly different to freeview in some of the weirdo channels that are not on freeview. My main issue with freesat is that the number of box manufacturers is limited and Humax seem to have cornered most of the market.
My box does not have amazon prime and you cannot install it either.Humax are now rolling out 4k boxes but not really supporting the apps on the older boxes. Youtube app has been down for a month with no comment from when they will fix it. very poor. Humax have a track record of slow to fix apps when the author updates across platforms.

Overall if the main consideration is no monthly fee then it is a good option aside of the app issues. If you have a smart tv already then it may not matter. The recording functionality is usually two channels max and is reliable.
If you do not care about recording though a good smart tv would suffice.
Hope this helps.

Never had Sky because of their 'pack' policy.
For example, you wouldn't get to the till in Tesco to be told 'you can only buy the baked beans if you also buy milk'.
I want sport. I don't want movies, I don't want kids, I don't want entertainment, I don't want broadband, I just want sport.
Anyway, rant over.
My solution is the Slimfast solution - it works for me.
I have a smart TV, a NowTV stick and a Humax Aura 2Tb. I bought the stick in October, with 1 month Sky Sport included, which is still subscribed to this day. Bargain.
The Aura has got everything (Netflix, Amazon Prime, all the catch up you could possibly want, YouTube and three tuners and so on). It also has BT Sport and Chromecast.
It does not (yet) support NowTV, although it does appear in the menu.

My broadband is 4G, courtesy of Three, and covers all my requirements - and all for £20 unlimited.

So why spend c£50 a month on Sky?

The knowledgeable community that is the HOL never fails to come up with the goods.

Notice now given to Sky (despite them pleading me to stay) and the Freesat box about to be ordered. Humax don't seem to offer Freesat boxes these days (they seem to be going down the Freeview route) but the box offered on the Freesat site seems to be ok.

Just need to get another broadband supplier now - probably going with Plusnet and avoiding Talk Talk.

Thanks, folks.

I've got an LG TV and it has a built in satellite tuner, (which I think is standard on their Smart TV's) so you literally plug the coax straight from your dish into the TV, and you get Freesat, works great. I'm pretty sure some other manufacturers do the same

Thanks for that; it may be just what I’m looking for.
