Martyn or Guaita
Humphrey or Ward
Shaw or Mitchell
Thorn or Cahill
Young or Tompkins
Thomas or Luka
Gray or McArthur
Salako or Eze
McGoldrick or Wilf?
Bright or Benteke
Wright or Ayew

who from the current squad gets in the composite first XI?

for me only Eze and Wilf

And although our third place in 90/91 was amazing, I agree with Coppell who said we were pretty average but were good at what we did, a sort of Burnley with more flair - our third said more about the state of English football at the time than it did about Palace (Wimbledon used to finish 6th or 7th regularly at this time). But I may have to revise my opinion a bit bcos the side back then compares favourably to our current 'established' premier league squad.

You mean at their age now? I know Grays brother, will ask him to bring his boots!

remember we just got beaten 7 - 0 by Liverpool so no tinted glasses here .
only two changes I would make to make the team back then better
1 Ward for Humphrey
2 Wilf for McGoldrick

No votes for Wright & Bright over Benteke & Ayew?

Only Wilf could get into that ‘91 team.

You don’t finish third in the league by being overrated.

I probably love that 1990 team more than at least one, if not all, of my children!

One of the reasons I think we play ultra-defensively now compared to the early 1990s is that the two main things a smaller club could rely on to compete with the big clubs have been taken away: Physical bullying and bad pitches.

If you want a reminder of how much we would bully teams watch the ZDS cup final. Keown is taken to pieces by Bright and Thomas!

Anyway, apart from Wright and Bright the whole of the current team would be miles better technically than the 1990 lot, as both sides were a product of their time.

If a match between them were played on a 2021 pitch with a modern ref and VAR then it would be a comfortable win for the current side. If, on the other hand, the game were played with a 1990 pitch and ref, it would be a very, very uncomfortable defeat for the current side, one or two of whom would end up needing counselling after!

I would say that is a fair summary. Based on current form and not historical performances (Cahill in his pomp at Chelsea would get in) Wilf would be the only one.

.

Can you imagine if the crazy gang got hold of him though? They would’ve kicked him out of the game within a few minutes, or wound him up so much he’d get sent off. Vinnie Jones would’ve gone for him straight from the kick off
