men are four times more likely than women to commit suicide.

its almost as if life is harder for men.

Men are also 3 times less likely to be diagnosed with a mental health issues. The most crucial point of intervention is being missed by GP's.

If you actually admit you have a problem and go to the gp. I'm sure the training is improving. Sadly this year will cause more suicides and I know of a fellow palace fan who took his life recently.
Not a guy I knew well but spoke to on a few occasions as was in the same block. Also an away ST holder. RIP.

A friend of mine killed himself about 3 years ago. He worked in a hospital, he was a professional, 6'0, and well liked. No one picked up on any of the signs which with hindsight were there, looking back at his photos you can see physical signs of depression along with other withdrawal characteristics. He was quiet and not the type of person to kick up a fuss. No one really thought much of it until it was too late.

Speaking to friends who are GP's they always say that people have to kick up a fuss for them to do something about any issue.

It's a British character trait to understate problems about any kind of issue.

It's creating the perfect storm.

-At work I was told there were 4,800 male suicides in 2018.
-I've also been told that men are less likely to go to see their GP in general.
-Men are less likely to express their feelings openly, both in terms of willingness and ability.
-My GP friend told me that unless people kick up a fuss the GP won't do anything (about any issue).
-Movember are currently running a campaign about male mental health highlighting the fact that men don't talk.
-There's an unconscious bias in society that says women are weak and men are strong, this plays against men as they are less likely to be listened to.

A combination of men being less likely to be forthcoming and doctors being less likely to listen, or dig a little deeper means that the best opportunity for intervention is missed.

Suicide is still a bigger killer than COVID for the under 50's.
