When I was in University in the 1980's, Media Studies was ridiculed as a sham Degree. Scholars learned by library books and the printed press, and TV and radio. How situations have changed. Access to internet, multiple news channels, facebook, and photo-shopped photos have completely changed the discipline. I am reading an excellent book (mostly pictures) by Hockney and Gifford."History of pictures". In the book is a photo of a milkman delivering pints through the rubble of The Blitz. The authors note that the milkman was in fact the photographers assistant, who donned the milkies costume for the photo. "don't believe everything at face value" So, in my opinion, Media Studies has gone from a joke Degree to a pivotal education in the space of 30 years. George Orwell was under-rated, and he under-estimated Government influence on the populace by an order of several magnitudes. Discuss, or critique the above.

We need engineers, scientists, doctors. and people with language skills (see my post about the SOAS London). How many respected journalists have a media studies degree? Yes we live in an interesting world with fake news and who is manipulating it and for what reason. However I don't think it's a good degree for a career. They can always read the threads on here and Stirlingsays and WE can put them right.

Nothing in the Humanities is valued at all anymore. STEM has been shoved down an eager audience's throat for years now.

I think you will find that every company...even the small ones have a person allocated for their media coverage across all online platforms. You may not like it but its here to stay and so they should at least go on courses or have a media degree (for the bigger companies.) Originally posted by Badger11

Bad form,.....to reply to your own post. However, language skills are are huge part of progressing your career. Not just vocabulary, but also speaking like a Toff. I met a journalist I actually respected for his accuracy to report a story. And He was from the SE London Press. I have met others who manipulated a story to get more page space. I don't know anyone who has a recent Media Studies Degree, so I'm pi$$ing in the wind with this topic. All career choices can be corrupt. I have witnessed a few meetings where illegal activities have been activated. Whistle-blow and your career is over. I would just like journalism to be less of "My Harvey is over-weight" or "look at my tlt$", and more about investigative journalism that actually exposes criminals Recent examples of $hlt journalism include Colin Stagg, Chris Jefferies. But hey, it gets the headlines
