Popularity is not an issue, necessity is.

I think it will be unpopular as almost any changes that raises tax or other costs are. I can imagine the campaigns against it already.

I do though think it is the way to go and likely to be done, probably quite soon but certainly as we move to electric vehicles.

With the probability that we will develop wireless conductive charging along all main routes, which will enable vehicles to remain charged as they move, the way to charge both for the power used, and road tax, will naturally migrate to such a method. The cost per mile depending on the vehicle and the way it is driven, which can easily be captured.

This will have the added benefit of vehicles needing much smaller batteries which would only be required for the short distances where "in the road" isn't available.

It's now under development, so not as fanciful as it sounds.

It's a consequence of going "green". Oil is evil in many eyes but the £40 billion it brought in through duties will have to be replaced from somewhere.

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

Once again, like the higher vehicle tax on 4 x 4's, it's 'city' and motorway thinking. If you live in the country with no train service and only one bus on a Thursday it's a bit unfair.
