Ok so we all like to say things like 'I had trials for blah blah when I was young' but genuinely interested to know who on here played at a decent level when they were younger and if anyone you played with went on to make it as a Pro?? So I'll go first... I played with Jody Morris and Clinton Morrison as a young teenager. We played for different sides but in the same league and all represented the Surrey boys representative side.. Jody was absolute quality from a young age and you just knew he would make it.. To be fair Clinton was decent but nothing special and I was surprised at how well he did for himself but fair play to him... I went on to the dizzy heights of the Ryman league and represented Banstead Athletic!! Anyone else?
Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!! |

Sunday league used to play against Paul Hinshelwood, he was an apprentice with Palace at the time and probably was not meant to be playing. He didn’t seem anything special but was a lot stronger and fitter than us.

David Price - when I played at West Wickham. I think he might have been a minicab driver at that point.

I played in a Sunday league team in the mid-sixties (in the Shirley & District under-15s league). We were total crap but Steve Kember at that time played for Laurels. They beat us 15-2! Edited by manoftaste (25 Oct 2020 7.56am)

When in the army I played in the same team as Lee Bradbury who went on to play for us, albeit not very successfully. Edited by Temps (25 Oct 2020 9.14am)

Great thread. When I played for Mitchley Avenue in the mid-to late 70s we had Len Prince turn out for us a couple of times. He made a handfull of appearances for Palace at left back I believe. We also played against Mel Blyth who played for Scarletts at the time. I've played with Teddy Maybank when I was with Shoreham in the Sussex County League, as well as Johnny Byrne (not our famous one but the Republic of Ireland/Sunderland/QPR one) who I'm still friends with today. I actually played against Bobby Stokes at that time, who scored the winner for Southampton v Man Utd in the FA Cup Final. He was playing for Chichester City and looked like he'd hidden the football up the front of his shirt and smoked a ciggy at half time in the centre circle. Sadly he died young, but I remember thinking at the time "Wow, you actually scored the winner in a Cup Final. No one can ever take that away from you." I also played on a Sunday with Jimmy Mann, one of the famed Ashton Gate 8 who are remembered at Bristol City to this day. Or I thought I did. It turned out he was called Jimmy Mann but wasn't THE Jimmy Mann, although he pretended to be. That was a long and complicated story.
Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry. |

The closest I ever got was playing against Simon Osbournes Dad with Simon on the touchline and as an used sub in a game which boasted Jim Cannon in the opposition line up. Jim Cannon was head and shoulders above any body on the pitch a real joy to watch up close. Both games at the old Croydon Mo ground top of the Purley way Edited by Apollofuzz (25 Oct 2020 11.49am)
