Not a good weekend for Maguire or Gomez, neither of whom look international quality this season. John stones has been a liability for 2 years, so all three of Southgate’s preferred CB’s are out of form or just not good enough.
I’m not holding my breath, because I think Southgate is fairly set on the above three, but what would your England CB pairing look like going into next summer?

Providing he’s fit, there can’t be many better than our boy Cahill.

Brighton’s Dunk should be in the running too as well as Mings

Southgate's squads are stale and predictable. He will choose the same until one goes to prison.

Dunk had his chance and wasn't good enough and this season even Brighton fans admit that he has been poor. There used to be plenty of English CBs to choose from but this season virtually all of them are looking poor. There is a certain French one that's looking very poor too but that's for a different forum!

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

I would say Connor Coady is one of them and maybe Eric Dier

Not to worry - there’s always Phil Jones.

I like Conor Coady and Eric Dier, who in my opinion is going to be a mainstay at tottenham and have his best ever season under Mourinho, but it doesn't seem like Southgate is going to place his trust in either one. Also a Dier/Coady pairing lacks pace big time. I used to like Maguire but he seems way off it this season.
I think Jamaal Lascelles should be given a chance

City were trying to loan out Stones yesterday too. What an expensive mistake he was. Strange as England have historically (in my time) had a glut of decent CBs that embody the battling, don't-give-em-an-inch, body-on-the-line spirit that prevents strikers from getting a look-in. Has that sort of footballer been coached out of the game for more technical professionals?

England's weakest position for a long time since we had Terry/Ferdinand/Campbell. I think Gomez is just a bit out of form at the moment, Maguire and Stones are awful though so I'd keep them away from the squad but Southgate is Mr Loyal so won't do the same.

England's CBs for me should be Gomez, Coady, Dunk, Dier and one of Mings or Keane based on the pairs form. Tarkowski would be a good pick if he could get out of Burnley and into somewhere like Everton/Wolves.

Being a CB is alot more than taking care of business at the back these days. Not all CB's can be the near perfect Virgil van Dijk, so you have to pick the qualities you want in your CB's.

IN the case of Maguire and Gomez they are pretty solid at the back, but have their moments. But Gomez is about as fast as it gets back there, and can play the ball out and around all day long. Maguire also can play the ball out and is an excellent threat in the opposing box as well as roaming striker when he feels like it LOL.

Walker has looked good as a CB when he plays 3xCB, but he cant pass for toffee, though he does have speed.

Oh, for the likes of Pearce, Butcher and Donkey. I think Terry was probably the last of the mold.

Mr Magoo is the most overrated England player in decades.
I have no idea how he even gets a place in the United side.
To me he is slow and lacks awareness when things get tough at the back.
