Yes it wasn't great but it was a freebie to give players a run out. Does anyone seriously think we would have beaten City with a reserve side. At least we know everyone bar Hennessey can score from the penalty spot.

These are players that have been educated to a much higher technical standard than those of previous years and should be comfortable on the ball, under pressure and being able to play it out. It's the managers of Roy's ilk that are behind the times. Players do what they're told. Did you ever hear Ferdinand talking about playing for England? If he tried to play it out from the back, or get beyond the midfield, he'd have lost his place in the team (under Capello, Sven). Similarly, Hodgson likes players that do what he says, keeps a rigid shape, which gives us the football we've been seeing for the last few seasons. Unadventurous, uninspiring, safety-first football.
