More sad news following on from the passing of Tim Brooke-Taylor,Stirling Moss and the news that there have been 10,612 recorded deaths from Covid-19. My thoughts and prayers go out to all their families in friends.RIP.

Terrific goalie, much maligned in 1970.

Would have racked up many more England caps if not for Gordon Banks.

That Banksy was always picked was probably why Bonetti had a howler against the Germans . Wasn't all his fault of course just an easy scapegoat as to why the best team in the world lost . The 70 side was imo better than the team that won the cup in 66 . RIP

Being goalie , and last man, always makes you the scapegoat for goals conceded. Saw him play in my first match at Stamford Bridge in the 1970's. Sad loss
I disengage, I turn the page. |

Bonnetti got the blame though?

He hardly had anything to do but then let a shot from Beckenbauer go under him for Germany's opening goal. Bonetti was a legend for Chelsea playing 600 games for them and his medals include winning the FA Cup,League Cup and Uefa Cup Winners Cup but I suspect most people remember him for that 'Faux Pas' in the World Cup, and his achievements and magnificent service for Chelsea are forgotten. RIP. Edited by Willo (15 Apr 2020 9.15am)

I've got his autograph on the match day programme after Chelsea beat us 5-1 (Osgood scoring 4 I think). I think it was our record crowd at the time and the traffic was solid after the game. So solid, their goalkeeper had time to shower and get stuck in it on his way home after the game. He was stuck next to us, so I asked him to sign. Funny old world. Wouldn't happen now of course. Unless I'm mistaken (Willo, you may be able to confirm?) he became a postman after he finished playing so he may be one of the few England internationals to have asked for even more signatures from other people than he was asked for his in his time!
Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry. |

Bonetti was indeed employed as a postman. Edited by Willo (15 Apr 2020 10.30am)

he was known as 'the cat' - we were spoilt for world class keepers back then: banks, shilton, clemence, stepney, corrigan, bonetti, our own john jackson was way down the pecking order but he'd be bang in contention today. Chelsea had a great side back then, and Bonetti was one of the greats. RIP
