often at the expense of Phil Barber, I liked some of the youngsters that came through about 86, Tony Finnegan and the young striker Andy Gray, bot not so much Andy (sic) Higginbottom

had some great times watching palace home & away through the 80s. Exactly that, the days when you could actually stand and count our fans at some away games, I think 57 at Middlesbrough and 63 at Shrewsbury was the lowest I counted, enjoyable days though, crap team, losing all the time in some far flung northern s*** hole, usually 1-0, but we all got to know each other, and the result didn’t seem to matter a lot of the time, we were going into enemy territory representing our little corner of South London and that was all that mattered, if we got some sort of result it was a bonus

Football wasn’t the global sport it is today with all the money and trimmings, not that that is particularly a bad thing. Just seem to remember low crowds, old stadiums and the threat of violence in the air. Coppell performed a miracle at Palace. Every year he added another few pieces and year in year we got better and better. Never has Selhurst seen anything that compares to the Wright and Bright era. Starting to waffle and get off subject. Was all that viagra I took

The Mullery years were certainly very poor but we must have been terrible back in the old division 3 south days, I think I’m correct in saying we hold the record for the greatest number of times a team had.to apply for re-election in the days when you finished in the bottom two.

Poor football, poor players, poor crowds (down to around 5,000 on occasions). To be honest we weren't that good when we went up to the top flight for the first time in 1969. We only won 6 games in a 42 match season and it was something of a miracle that we stayed up, and that there were two worse sides than us.I remember us labouring through many a game with our backs to the wall. But I guess it is better being poor in the top division than a lower one. The three seasons in Division 3 weren't too bad as we were generally competitive and played some very good football, and there was the famous cup run in that period.

Dad started taking me to games in 3rd Division South and we used to lose a lot. I used to be glued to the radio for the result of away games and remember losing 6-0 or 6-1 to Exeter.

I recall the dark and dismal days as highlighted in the plethora of posts when I often pulled crab apple grimaces and expressions of disgust were plentiful! Mouth frequently forming a downward crescent and head hung heavily akin to a despondent mule.Been some grim times since I first started supporting the club in the 60s.
