I put it on the BBC thread but it deserves a thread of its own. When will someone with influence in the media have the balls to stand up to this idiocy?

He's clearly not making the point to be intentionally racist – he'd already used it elsewhere in a previous argument. Much like the Danny baker furore – weighing everything up that was clearly not racist by intent. Context is everything here, but on twitter, none can be found. However It never ceases to amaze me that people, especially highly paid, well trained and socially aware media people, do not have the ability to control or restrain themselves when it comes to social media. In that respect, the minute you start engaging, you're entering extremely dangerous territory. I cannot even being to understand how someone who knows they are engaging in a debate with a black person would decide out of all the available quotes in the world, to use that one. I had thought maybe he didn't see who it was but even then it's pretty stupid.
Did you know? 98.0000001% of people are morons. |

However, it really does say it all when we get to a point where White people are afraid to engage in an argument with Black people in case they lose their jobs.

I had thought maybe he didn't see who it was but even then it's pretty stupid. I wonder if ITN saw it as a convenient way of retiring an ageing member of staff who was probably on a high salary. He shouldn't have been sacked but these days any slip of the tongue can never been forgiven even after a fulsome apology. With regard to your point about self censorship I agree it does suggest that TV news presenters rely heavily on a script that will have been vetted for them. Trevor McDonald was an excellent Newsreader but when he left that role he floundered and was found wanting as a chat show host and then presenter of non news shows. I wonder do we big up our TV news presenters and if you take away their autocue and editorial oversight they are actually very human and fallible to the same silly mistakes the rest of us make.
