Hi, I'm looking for some help on a piece I'm writing for The Blizzard on the Palace v Real Madrid exhibition match in 1962. It's a great story (a full-strength Real, who were playing in the European Cup final two weeks later, beat third-division Palace 4-3) and I'm keen to speak to players involved. From what I can gather four of the Palace team are still alive: Terry Long, Bill Glazier, Vic Rouse and Andy Smillie. If anyone is able to put me in touch with any of those four, or anyone else who'd be able to give me more detail on the match and how it came to take place, I'd really appreciate it. Cheers, Jo

I can't help you much (though I was at the game), but in case you haven't seen it, a thread on the Real match was started in the Nostalgia section on 11th June 2014. I made a small contribution, pointing out that the £10k that we paid them to come was at the time of my writing equivalent to £186K. That thread contains some photos, showing us playing in sky blue jerseys with narrow vertical claret stripes. In fact, the pictures are in black and white but the above colours are correct. That was my favourite strip and it lasted one season. The programme, which I still have, is noteworthy for not carrying the date of the match. A mere detail!

It will probably make it easier to locate the Real Madrid thread if you have the date of the last post - 13th August 2015.

I was at the game and on the Holmesdale terrace directly behind Terry Long's goal. He didn't score many but that was a cracker. Mind you the RM defence stood off him for so long so he could get a shot away that I think even I could have managed it! Years later we became neighbours. He was then assistant manager at Millwall if I remember correctly. That was in Hazlemere, High Wycombe but I have no idea if he still lives in that area. It was at least 35 years ago
For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally. |

The club still has on display the silver salver presented by Real Madrid. It has an embossed outline of the Bernebau Stadium. Although I was not at the game I have a programme, ticket and a postcard advising a fan he has got a ticket.

I have two action photos from the game and one of the Real Madrid team lined up under the new floodlights. I also know a bloke who's in touch with Terry Long and Vic Rouse, let me know if you still want those details.
