...and give way to other spectator sports ?

Football is massively dominant across the whole planet at present. Will that strength increase or decrease ? Places like Japan, China, India etc are not noted for being as football-crazy as Latin America.

I heard a rumour that rugby has massively stolen a march on Football in France.

Then we have new sports like UFC

Darts has followed improvements in television technology and was difficult to screen many decades ago.

some interesting data below on the most popular Olympic Sports for viewers...

it's not hard to imagine it waning here. I think we've seen peak tv spend, especially for non-elite clubs. were that to reverse significantly, I think there could be a palpable sense of decay. good players leaving, more and more tv saturation for diminishing returns...a bad spiral

Esports are growing fast. Audiences are already massive, and although they might not make a noticeable dent in the short term, long term there will be a big shift towards them as Gen A get older. As Deloitte puts it

'Perhaps the really key piece of the puzzle when it comes to the potentially impending domination of esports is, as Deloitte observed in a recent report, that there is a “young demographic of digital natives who are less engaged with TV and professional sports than previous generations” that esports broadcasters can tap into.'

It's not just football that will be threatened by this – although most premier league teams already have an esports franchise and UEFA recently launched an esports Champions League. In a world where kids will gravitate more towards affordable entertainment streamed across platforms like twitch, mixer, stadia and who knows what to come, live sport will have to find a way of co-existing. Slightly depressing IMO but somewhat inevitable.

In the 1980s Italy was king of football the stadiums were packed and they had a TV deal which pre-dates the Premier League.

Then they hit the doldrums and fans started to pick and choose their games because of the cost. Milan derbies packed to the rafters, Milan versus a smaller team 20,000.

I can definitely see that happening in this country if they keep shaking the money tree. I believe the current TV deal was not an increase on the previous one and that the PL had trouble selling one of the packages.

So yes maybe in a few years fans will have enough, that plus wall to wall football practically every day well I like Christmas but every day?

Sorry, I don't see what you've posted here has to do with football/sport in general?

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

Personally, I've already started to watch less football over the last few years.

I'll happily watch Palace, although that's not exactly riveting at the moment, but outside of that I'm really not that bothered by other games anymore. I find the over hyping by Sky for games like City Liverpool or their Super Sundays makes me even more unlikely to watch and even England games, which I used to never miss, I find I'm very nonchalant about.

UFC I used to watch all the time, but even that has started to lose my interest with the top fighters of old, that also had personality, disappearing. I would only really want to watch Nate these days. If Chuck Lidell came out of retirement, I'd watch it in a heartbeat!

all power corrupts. Absolute power, corrupts absolutely.

I believe that the behaviours of many footballers makes the game less enjoyable to watch today when compared with 20 or 30 years ago.

Especially all the cheating and diving. Also time-wasting by teams that are one goal up. Mourinho's legacy. Win at all costs. Play Boring football and sod the spectators.

rugby is an amazing sport with great values. football lacks core values -- the money, the cheating, the diving, the aggressive culture can destroy the game here. but football has the advantage of far better infrastructure.

The popularity of football could wane if it continues to be milked to death with endless TV coverage.

There is something to be said for rationing exposure but of course whilst the gravy train is till on the tracks that won't happen. As the saying goes , familiarity breeds contempt, and an endless diet of football on an almost daily basis may well be beyond the appetite of even the most enthusiastic follower.

I no longer watch any football if it doesn't involve Palace although I did recently watch Wales when they had three Palace players in the side
