I see that the president of Atlantic Records has been forced to step down after criticism of the Run DMC costume that he wore to a fancy dress party seven years ago. Can someone enlighten please about what is so offensive about what he wore when the whole idea of the party was to come dressed as your favourite musical icon?

So he has been asked to 'Walk This Way' to the exit. Maybe he should have gone as Steve Tyler. Do we have pitures?

One assumes the whole issue is about 'Black face' and the fact that is is viewed as being offensive. If a black person applied white makeup to his face and went to a fancy dress party dressed as Elton John would this also be deemed offensive ? I really don't recall there being any furore about Michael Jackson changing his appearance. Edited by Willo (16 Oct 2019 2.38pm)

There’s no way people don’t understand why blackface can be construed as offensive at this point - you can disagree with that conclusion certainly, but to still be asking ‘why is white face ok’ is painfully, painfully silly.

Really pretty sure there was.

It was a genuine question not a rhetorical one. Maybe I don't possess the bandwith cerebrally to understand the complexities of this issue but I am more than happy to be educated accordingly to perhaps gain a greater understanding of the issues involved. And this is where we have to differ. It is the double standards that matter in 2019, not some carefully engineered position of being offended by historical attitudes. How long are we going to endure an ever growing list of behaviours that are deemed offensive to one or another 'races'? Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (16 Oct 2019 6.04pm)

Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (16 Oct 2019 6.04pm) To be clear, I never particularly shared my view on blackface. Clearly, based on your post above, you understand the reason it is deemed offensive by some, you just disagree with that reasoning - that’s a different position to that which I was challenging. I don’t really see how it’s about power and influence though.

I don’t really see how it’s about power and influence though. It's about minorities flexing the proverbial muscles in a country where they are relative newcomers or have risen in social status. Your fence might need mending but who wants to hear it under those circumstances? Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (16 Oct 2019 6.47pm)
