I think you are probably right. Transfer deals are too complicated these days with agents and third parties and sponsors all seeming to be involved. It's also about ego's who wants to be known as the player who was the makeweight in a big deal?

Players also have more control the old pros will tell you that they had very little say in where they were transferred. Today's player quite rightly picks and chooses his club.
