Honestly, how??? Can anyone explain to me how other teams are able to spend tens of millions on players and even despite the AWB sale we are not even close to making any sort of marquee signing or someone to a least boost the team, or replace the player we have just sold for a princely sum? This isn't a sarcastic post, it's a genuine question. Even Southampton have spent about £40million on strikers already. Surely it isn't rocket science in that you identify gaps in your team, plan ahead for recruitment and then begin negotiating once the window opens. I don't accept the fact we have no money and we got rid of a load of dead wood last season Genuinely boggles the mind!!! Or am I supposed to wait til the last day of the transfer window when we spend £100 million on a top class striker, right back, winger and central defender?
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

Crikey that would be a great signing if he could play all those positions.

I stopped reading at ‘marquee signing.’ There is a right back coming in. Further than that I assume we’re trying to make the limited money stretch further. And Southampton are in a different stage of the spend-conserve cycle that all Prem clubs in the bottom half experience. West Ham have gone through it as well. Happens everywhere but the real underlying reasons are the poor scouting and buying players for £25-30 mil and paying several players in the squad £100-130k per week. Our wage bill is astronomical.

I think it's definitely an issue with wages. We gave out some crazy contracts to players like Sakho, Zaha, Meyer, Benteke, and even back to Cabaye. It's these high wages that are not helping our FFP. It is baffling though as many articles state we are fairly high in the rich list, not including our US owners money. I think Parish is his worst enemy though as he faffs about too long over transfers and we inevitably lose out to rival teams. The crap will hit the fan if we pass up on potential signings and then sell Wilf at the end of the window.

I understand that there are FFP rules, that we are operating at a loss and that players are on high wages, or more I acknowledge these things as oppose to understand them however is this not something all clubs have to contend with? It just seems to me that we are always fishing around the bargain bucket for scraps whereas other sides, such as your southamptons, watfords, west hams, leicester etc. always seem to have money to spend on what I would deem 'marquee signings'. In fact I would consider any striker £20mil above as a marquee signing and we've been crying out for that for years. Batshuayi almost seems like a cruel tease now. Luka was a snap, Max was on a free and apart from Benteke and Sakho I cannot remember getting excited about any of our signings going back a while. I'm not sure I buy in to the 'spend and conserve' theory, could be wrong but at the risk of keyboard warriors that sounds made up to me. To be clear, it's not really a moan as I expect us to do the bare minimum in the hope of staying up, which we have done. 7 years may seem like a long time but it really isn't and I do not expect the club to turn round and say we are now going to challenge for Europe, I suppose it is just that the AWB money, plus lack of any real activity since BFS has me wondering.

We do not have the same money and revenue as ‘your southamptons, west hams, leicester.’ That is the point of building a new bigger earning main stand, which is isn’t progressing fast enough, or at all. The spend and conserve cycle is not made up. All of those clubs you mentioned have gone through it, you just don’t remember because you don’t support them. I don’t know an awful lot about Watford but I suspect they save some on player costs with their Italian arrangement. And our wage/revenue ratio is worse than all of those you mention. Not only is that a FFP consideration but a real life one. I know you’re frustrated but this has been brewing because of our player strategy and policy, or lack of. We need to get through it and come out the other side and go again with more skill than just lashing out to save our skin, which is what Parish has been doing since we were promoted. This is what must be remembered when people say it’s our longest stint in the Prem. Parish has achieved that with this spending that’s hamstringing us now. I suppose remembering it myself will help me deal with the boring football because I doubt many quality managers would be over the moon about this current conservative part of this cycle we ideally need to smooth out to consistent spending.
