On the AWB thread the question was asked whether Fosu-Mensah is rated because he’s a Man U player. There has certainly been a tendency for the England team to rate them over others. Wes Brown and Tom Cleverley amassed as many caps caps as Paul Reaney, Peter Osgood, Chris Lawler, Rodney Marsh, Stan Bowles, Charlie George, Alan Hudson and Matt Le Tissier did between them.
If Brown and Cleverley had played for CPFC they’d have got as close to the England team as they have since leaving Old Trafford. And rightly so.

I believe there is a big club bias at England level. I presume there is a level of commercial consideration in picking England squads when you consider who has been left out over the years.

Not sure I would say this thrice though.

Sorry about that!
The irony is that most England crowds are composed of supporters of smaller clubs.
This preference for Big Club players hasn’t been successful anyway.

Correct. Up until recently it's felt like the FA pick "must have" players for the commercial interests and leave the managers to pick the other 10. Southgate manages it well, but they still throw on the off ridiculous stipulation, like the Rooney testimonial.

I was never Beckham’s biggest fan but the fact he got wheeled out for a 10 minute cameo in lots of games must have been for sound tactical reasons

But is Fosu-Mensah highly rated and if so by whom?

He came to us as a much hyped youngster with a big future ahead of him and had a few excellent games for us plus a few poor ones until he was eventually dropped.

He went on loan to Cardiff last season and didn't set the world alight there and ended up being dropped by them too.

As I said, who is it that rates him?

One of the reason that so many of the England team players come from the big six clubs is because they Hoover up all of the top talents anyway. AWB is likely to be off to Manchester United and the same club is looking to buy the two highly rated defenders at Leicester

Yes, I agree with you and if players are the best in their position or suit a particular tactical plan then fine but my point is that players like Brown and Cleverley only get into the England team because of the club they play for.

Think Beckham's footballing quality actually goes under the radar slightly because of his 'celebrity' status.

Original point, definitely.

He was a good enough player when younger certainly but he was still getting into the team when past his sell by date.
It’s hypocritical of me because I’d criticise a player for deciding he didn’t want to play for his country and I’m moaning about him being too willing to play but there you go.

Absolutely. If AWB signs for Man Utd he will be named in next England squad. Southgate will fall back on "I wanted to see him in a tournament environment, I have he did well" nothing to do with "he is now a Man Utd paalyer"

Fully agree. He was actually a fantastic player, a point overlooked because of him and Posh being arguably the two biggest media whores in history.

He definitely won some cheap caps at the end though.
