Cup Final anyone? With Watford's ignominious achievement alongside a very healthy league position, does anyone now think that the whole 'cup or survival' argument holds any water? Did our defeats at Boro and Watford help our survival cause?

We would have been safe even with the cup run. And everybody knew it.

Well it wasn't a weak team against Watford, they just played like one. Not helped by a sub par performance by 'flapper' Guaita. I suppose the disappointment was not as great as Wolves felt after Sunday but still very annoying.

There are three or four periods during the season when, if you have successful cup runs, you have a fixture pile up which means you may have to play 4 matches in two weeks. For the bigger teams with large squads they can cope with it but to the sides with limited resources, this is the time when the Cup vs Survival dilemma comes to the fore. For this reason, resting players for cup matches becomes almost a necessity if you want to consistently play a strong team in the league.

So is this why Watford and Wolves made it so far in the Cup but struggled to break into the top six this season?

We screwed our chances of the cup final by not doing our league business earlier. No one will care that Watford lost to City in a couple of years anyway. Well, except Watford fans. I am happy that we are virtually safe for another year.

Watford and Wolves have had good seasons and were never stressing about league position. Not sure why you mention the top 6 because that is s different league anyway. If we were to win our league it would be 7th position.

Seventh position could qualify for the Europa League which seems to present its own set of problems for a lot of clubs. Would the reward of appearing in a European competition be enough?

I agree it caused Burnley problems. We would need more squad depth to play in Europe and I think we are 3/5 years away minimum from getting to that level (even if we do head in the right direction with our purchases, management and stadium), however it is something I very much look forward to seeing at some point in the future.
