Apparently using DNA sampling from a relative and comparing to biological traces left on a shawl at a confirmed Ripper murder it appears the murderer was a then 23-year-old Polish barber by the name of Aaron Kosminski. There are the usual objections such as there is no way to conclusively prove that this shawl was the one found at the scene, or/and that it was not somehow contaminated. Still, a compelling development. Edited by Stirlingsays (20 Mar 2019 11.41am)

I love these mysteries every couple of years some one announces they have proof who the ripper is this time is does seem fairly conclusive as long as the DNA tests hold up.
1. The DNA test used was not the one police use today so rather than a 1 in millions standard her test would have applied to tens of thousands of men in London at the time. (False positive). 2. The DNA sample was from a letter sent by JTR but many critics claim the letter is a fake. To summarise: The letter may have be written by JTR and she has identified him or The letter was written by the artist or someone else as a hoax so the DNA is irrelevant.

Might i suggest reading Bruce Robinsons book, They all love Jack: Busting the ripper. Bloody good read. Took him 15 years to research and write.

The 'Ripper' letters are almost certainly hoaxes....so I think all of those criticisms have validity. This development seems rather more promising though as you say perhaps it will also similarly be picked apart. If the DNA test is above board and kosher and the only objections are on the part of the physical evidence....then it's a pretty strong claim....but a claim nevertheless. There are also some interesting books about the unsolved Hammersmith murders in 1964/5. There were eight, possibly 10 victims, but the case is largely forgotten.

Edited by eritheagle (20 Mar 2019 2.24pm) I saw that series a crazy theory that the American serial killer HH Holmes who is believed to have killed around 200 people was in fact JTR. I don't believe it is correct as JTR was an opportunistic sexual sadist. HH Holmes killed people for money and to avoid being caught. Holmes killed people mainly by poison so the way the victims were killed is rather different. That said they uncovered so many similarities and coincidences between the two men it did make me wonder for a while. It was on the History channel well worth a watch. The Ripper thing has always irritated me. The real story of the Ripper is police incompetence. If you cut through all the sensationalism, ignore the fake letters and multiple theories about foreigners, the real culprit is fairly obvious. A man who a policeman found over the body of a victim who had just been killed and with no one else in sight. His walk to work took him close to all the slayings and he worked with meat. Duh!
