A big noise is being kicked up because some Tory objected to a law on FGM being passed through in parliament without significant debate. I can't say I have any tolerance for any stated approved mutilation of children....but I suppose he has a point about laws in general. What narks me is......where is the law on male genital mutilation? How is it....in the world of so called equality....that, quite rightly, we have laws banning female genital mutilation but no laws banning male genital mutilation?

Since male circumcision is a religious practice for both Jews and Muslims, fat chance of getting it banned. I agree with you though (unless for genuine medical reasons) both male and female should be banned.

Well removing clitoris and inner labia is not the same as a foreskin.

You are totally right....the few medical conditions that necessitate this are a completely different matter. Someone in my family required this for medical reasons as a toddler and it is what it is. But the current policy is wrong and has been indefensible since we emerged from religious dogma. Yet...it isn't even mentioned.

While I'd agree that removing most of the clitoris is certainly more severe than a foreskin it's a bit like grading severity of car crashes.....Some are worse than others but at the end of the day we all want to avoid car crashes. Not all FGM removes the clitoris.....some practice just removing some of the labia. Yet it is still banned....and quite rightly.

Religious dogma aside, I think the main reason that there is more emphasis placed on banning female circumcision is that, generally speaking, surgery on males is done by qualified professionals (even if not medically qualified certainly the Jewish mohiels are trained in the procedure) and performed with sterilized instruments in reasonably safe conditions. FGM is mostly done by an untrained woman, usually in unsanitary conditions, using anything from a shard of broken glass to a rusty razor blade. The stitching up afterwards is done using any form of thread available at the time - and certainly nothing is sterilized, which is why long term problems from infections, sterility and even death are far more common. And let's not even go to the fact of the enjoyment some men profess of tearing the whole thing open on their wedding night........ a friend who is a midwife, after a very difficult delivery resulting from the issues of FGM once actually had a husband ask if she could stich it up again so he could have the pleasure a second time.

Wow....Blimey. And you are right of course, though a small number of baby boys die every year from the inevitable botch jobs or complications.....However, I have no doubt that the horrors of FGM are even worse.
