if you can remember a particularly witty retort then the search bar should help.

Have you tried going into your 'inbox' & then backtracking? Mine lists all of mine going back to 2006(ish)

You can't. In the busier forums they simply drop off the boards once the capacity of that forum has been reached. Palace talk goes back about 5 years but over 100 pages, General talk goes back about 4 years but less than 30 pages worth. You could try a Google cache search.

Question is have they been deleted off the database and if so have they been archived somewhere? Just because the software doesn't have the functionality to access them at the web portal doesn't mean a nice administrator armed with a SQL prompt couldn't get them back. There should be a data retention policy that defines how long data should be retained for and when it should be deleted but there's no requirement for it to be any particular period (in a case like this). If we still had thick client newsreaders and sent our messages via NNTP of course your client software would have kept a copy of everything you did locally. I'm not a fan of web applications for a number of reasons, and this lack of control on the client side is one of them. I think news still exists but it's nothing like what it was before these web fora came along and there isn't, and never was, such a thing as alt.fan.crystal-palace (as far as I know). BTW the BBS seems to let me find all posts by a given user going back to the year dot - I just picked a longstanding user there at random and found stuff he'd posted in 2004. And you can get posts by W^H Trolley going back well before that :-)

have you tried the wayback machine? I've noticed "some editing" does happen as well so whatever you want find may have been deleted.
