Strength in Depth??

It seems to me that there are several Premiership teams whose squad is filled up to 25 with footballers earning anything up to £50k a week who are actually pretty useless at that level. When the first 11 are rested they really really struggle. Cardiff, Huddersfield, Fulham, Leicester, Newcastle, and so on, embarrassed by lower ranked teams, and yet fielding a team earning up to half a million pounds a week between them.

Our club struggled to beat a fourth tier team with 10 men for all but 2 minutes of the game, despite the squad being so thin that Zaha and Townsend had to play their 9th game in 5 weeks. We have unloaded three "squad players" this week, Puncheon, Williams and Mutch. None have been near the first team for more than a game or two for two years. Mutch has had nearly four years of £50k a week and could rarely even be farmed out on loan. We have been playing virtually the same 11 most of the season, apart from injuries.

We are now in the January transfer window, and struggling Premiership clubs are being urged by their fans to "sign a striker", "spend the premiership millions to save us from relegation" and so on. This rarely leads to success. Remember Jan 18 window? Daniel Sturridge, huge loan fee, barely played, West Brom relegated. Jordah Hugill (or maybe Jordan Who) £10 million to West Ham, barely played, now shipped out. I could go on.

Congratulations to Gillingham, Newport, Barnet, Oldham and the other lower tier teams who shamed their supposedly superior and better paid opponents. I hope you make a lot of money from this competition.

We've got decent depth everywhere but attack (not just strikers - wingers and attacking midfielders). Makes a big difference in league games too, as those are the players you need off the bench to change a game. We can't do that at the moment.

Can any of the lower half of the Premier say they have game changers on the bench?

For all fans that are moaning about new players and who are we going to sign, I personally don’t think we need anyone. Here me out.

We clearly don’t have lots of money and we are doing our best to reduce the wage bill (Mutch, Williams and Punch all leaving). Roy’s boys will have enough to stay up so let’s not get ourselves in a bidding war, paying inflated prices and more huge wages.

We have Benteke and Wickham to come back which will give us (different) options up front. I’d prefer we save the money and get some better players in the summer. It’s the Euros the year after so players will be wanting game time to get into their respective national sides. Solanke went for 19m for goodness sake. There will be better value in the summer.

Ward
Meyer
Hennessey
Schlupp
Wickham
Kelly
Riedewald

This was our bench against wolves. Add benteke when fit and a couple of half decent buys/loans to the squad and its not too shabby. We've had a lot worse...

I think we probably do need a couple in attacking positions, but having just seen Solanke go to Bournemouth for 19m with an injury I can't disagree with you about waiting it out.

We should survive this year and it's a good observation about the summer tournament. Maybe best to wait.

It sounds good on paper, but it's a dangerous game to try to stay up with the smallest margin for error as possible.

Wickham has been injured constantly, it's likely he'll miss more games. Let's face it.

Benteke has been useless when healthy, so I'm not how getting him back will benefit us, since he can't score a goal to save his life anymore. Ayew is more prolific.

Ok, so even without those two, we're not in dire straits. But what about if Wilf gets hurt? If that happens, how would you feel about our chances to survive with no reinforcements?

It does seem like this is another transfer window where we go into it thinking we're getting all new star players, and end up getting nothing. Maybe it's good to save money in January...Unless it puts us in danger of relegation in May.

If we got Batshuayi and Moses- we'd be golden.
