Only just saw the game and I gotta feel sorry for Meyer. It’s inevitable fans will start turning on him.

He can’t get a game, and when he does, he’s being played out of position. He’s a creative midfielder. Not a defensive one.

To me this just stinks of utter incompetence from our scouting department, who seem to be unable to differentiate between “deep” and “defensive”.

He played one season for Schalke “deep” in a Jorginho type role, and they seemed to of translated that to someone who could replace Cabaye.

The guy is not a defensive midfielder, he’s a creative one. I’ve said it since the start, were not gonna get the best out of him playing him in Cabayes role, it’s really as simple as that.

So frustrating to watch Schlupp and Mccarthur as our furthest forward midfielders when Meyer is on the pitch. He’s being completely wasted.

I guess it’s all rather academic, considering he can’t get a game in the league anyway. But, still, it would be utterly criminal for us to waste what is arguably the most technically gifted player we’ve ever had at the club in this way.

Why can’t Roy see this?

I don't know.

Its worrying that a player of Meyers quality is looking pretty average in our team .

We do seem quite good at ruining players at the moment. Benteke can’t hit a barn door, Jairo and now Meyer.
Maybe it’s the rigidity of our system. We are a team that’s whole existence based around merely existing in the premier league and that means we have to play in a certain way.
We are lucky we have Wilf really, without him we would be a pretty dull watch but he is probably the one luxury player a team like us can afford.

Wasn't defensive midfield where he made his name?

Edit. This from Sky Sports:

Sky Germany reporter Max Bielefeld recently spoke to the Transfer Talk podcast about Meyer, saying: "Without doubt, Max Meyer is a really talented guy but he had one good season with Schalke.

"He owes a lot to the new manager Tedesco because what he did was make Meyer play as a defensive midfielder in a No 6 or No 8 position when previously, he was always considered a No 10. That was last season when he played really well."

I'm not saying you're wrong mind, but there's an impression out there that he was a great DM at Schalke. Maybe there's a nuance between 'defensive' and 'deep' that people have missed though, like you say.

Made his name as a number 10. Thats where he played when people were making a big fuss. Also where he played for Germany at the olympics and u21 Euro’s.

He played in a 3 for Schalke last season. Mainly with Goretzka and Bentaleb or Geis. Those 2 were box to box and would be in charge of the more physical duties. Meyers role was as a playmaker, just from a deeper position. The simplistic analysis of journalists etc. Is to say that means he was a defensive midfielder, but he just wasn’t. It’s was a particular type of system that just meant he took up a certain position.

Even without these facts. It’s pretty clear to see he isn’t a defensive midfielder & he’s not a like for like replacement for Cabaye at all. Cabaye wasn’t even really a defensive midfielder to begin with, but he had the attributes to be converted into one.

2 entirely different players. Everytime Meyer is in the final 3rd he looks a threat. The “deep” role doesn’t work in our system of play unless you’re also a tenacious and defensive ball winning midfielder.

It’s true. I agree completely.

The problem is, that plan has a sell by date. And once the sell by dates passed, we get relegated and all of a sudden our survival players that we spend big bucks on leave & our style of play has already been surpassed by half of the teams in the championship.

Been saying this for years.

If we’re gonna stick to the system we use. Meyer should be taking the role Schlupp had last night and the role we see Mccarthur in during league games.

Have Luka and/or kouyate in front of the defence, or kouyate to the right, Meyer can pick the ball up deep, midfield or higher up and be that central creative spark I can’t remember the last time we had.

If anyone can’t see that after his sub appearance v Arsenal they need to be asked and ask themselves some serious questions.

We also have lower expectations than Schalke, and less immediate on Meyer to deliver his highest, which should be factored in too.

If it becomes obvious Roy is too stubborn to use this dangerous player and we continue to fail then I’m afraid I’ll want Roy gone asap. The match day frustrations with Roy I accepted when he was producing excellent, consistent results, but if he’s not and it’s obvious why and he won’t change... I didn’t go ballistic at all this season btw.

I like Roy, I think he's about right for us at the moment. However, buying players like Guaita and Meyer and then taking 10 years to get them into the team is embarrassing. Wayne is doing ok but we need better than ok and I thought that was why we signed a top European goalkeeper. I can see this turning into a Steve M type situation.

As for Meyer, he's obviously got quality, I love how he changes things when he comes on. I just don't understand why he is not starting in the Prem.

It's the same with Jairo. We try and ship him out to Swansea and for Ayew!!!!!! So glad he said no but he must be feeling like he made a big mistake coming here.

I know Roy doesn't like to change a winning team but he doesn't seem to want to change a losing one either.

That said I have to believe that Roy sees stuff in training that we don't but the fact that AWB would not be in the team now if it were not for the fact that we were just so short at the time that we just needed a body in that position.

It does not fill me with confidence that we can have such a talented player in our academy and he would have probably have been moved on save for Ward being crock.

You can see that Meyer is a good player, neat on the ball, tidy in possession and always available for the ball.
However, I struggle to see how he fits into the way Roy sets out his teams and think he will have a limited role as an impact sub.
I think the scouting department got him in because he was ‘free’ and had a good pedigree with Schalke and Germany.
Clearly he is a different type of player to Cabaye or RLC and Roy doesn’t seem to know what to do with him.
Personally I would like to see him with two defensive midfielders behind him with Meyer as an advanced midfield player trying to release the forwards.
He already seems to be on the same wavelength as Wilf.
