The cricket thread was locked for some reason I'm unaware of?

Anyway....thought I would discuss the test squad for Ski Lanka.

Joe Root (Yorkshire, capt) Expected...but I don't regard him as much of a captain.

Moeen Ali (Worcestershire) A poor pick in my opinion. Performs badly on tours.

James Anderson (Lancashire) Oh Jimmy, Jimmy....Hopefully he continues to perform.

Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire) I would play him as just a batsman and have Foakes but when he's in form he's up there.

Rory Burns (Surrey) About bloody time!

Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire) Hopefully he does better than the last away tour.

Jos Buttler (Lancashire) Always knew he had it in him.

Sam Curran (Surrey) The 'right stuff'.

Joe Denly (Kent) I have no bloody idea with this one! I have no words....Spinning all rounder in case Ali implodes again?

Keaton Jennings (Lancashire) Again...no bloody idea...top quality bloke...but perhaps he's just not good enough. Very lucky to be picked.

Jack Leach (Somerset) I would have had Bess but he's up there with the best spinners we have.

Ollie Pope (Surrey) Should have played the last two tests.

Adil Rashid (Yorkshire) Deserves his place, bowling less poor balls.

Ben Stokes (Durham) Needs to start making all the right headlines instead of the wrong ones.

Olly Stone (Warwickshire) About bloody time! They don't like it up 'em' and he can put it up there.

Chris Woakes (Warwickshire) A bit like Ali....good for English wickets but terrible aboard.....Not sure he deserves another tour chance.

I'm glad that someone understood why the England v India thread was locked.

I did actually PM Stuk to tell him that I had locked the thread asking him to start another for the forthcoming winter series but he disappeared offline

He's really a batsman who bowls a bit of part time spin much as Joe Root does.

According to Ed Smith he has been picked due to the heavy weight of runs he's made this season but he didn't mention that his runs were scored in division 2 against pretty weak bowling attacks.

I doubt whether he will play as Jack Leach is the "spare" spinner and presumably Ollie Pop would get the nod ahead of Denly anyway

Unusual squads and I'm wondering if some of the selections for the main squad are just to keep them close by and used to the conditions in case they need to be called up to the big boys squad.

The Lions is normally a testing ground to see how players cope and it's unusual to see full internationals like Mark Wood playing unless he is on standby. Likewise I think that they might be seeing how Jason Roy copes in the longer version of the game whilst staying close by the main squad.

I can't help think that they misplaced Roy and Hain into the wrong squads.

I have Hain down as a future test player.

There's an element of a 'pay day' to these squads for the 'nearly' men who didn't quite make it....I think Wood falls into that category.....Injury has pretty much wrecked his international career.

Also....Jennings should have been here.....I hope he proves me wrong and proves Ed Smith's ideas about 'home' and 'away' test players.....though that's what I think about Ali and Smith's got him on the main tour.

Though I think that's because he's Root's mate first and foremost.

Which makes me envious of the Aussie selection system....where captains don't get a say.

I definitely think we have quite a few budding test players in that Lion's squad though.

How can a captain take charge of a game that includes players that he doesn't approve of

It can happen in the Australian set up. They haven't exactly been doing badly.

Involving likes and dislikes in the selection of a side isn't very advisable....though it might make for a more enjoyable dressing room the reality is that they aren't there to be buddies....that's a happy plus but not the point.

We saw with the Pietersen affair how dropping him....might have made the main players happier but we were a poorer side.

I can also see how Boycott wouldn't have benefited from treatment like this....and he ended on an average of 47....two better than Cook.

Likewise....keeping your mates in the side is also not progressing the side.

If you're talking about the all dominating Australian side - that picked itself.

If a captain doesn't fancy a bowler that has been foisted upon him he just won't bowl him

No I'm talking about how the Australian team has been selected since way before any of us alive were born.

That happens regardless of how the player is picked. Let's not forget that a captain doesn't get total say anyway.....he gets one say in three I think.

However, the Australian method for selection is better.
