It's got nothing to do with the government, she doesn't work for them. Even Iran hasn't accused her of spying for the UK. What she should have done is flown her parents here, instead of taking herself and her child there, if all she wanted to do was introduce one to the other. Then the husband and campaign group didn't go down well:

There isn't a lot the government can do beyond pressing the Iranians to release her. Boris didn't help but her real crime is she is a western journalist which the current regime hates. There are many dual British Iranians citizens if we tried something against the regime I have no doubt they would be rounded up. If I was Foreign Secretary I would quietly say to the Iranians "Trump is a nightmare we are reasonable so do business with us. But you have to throw me a bone if you do we will push for Iran to be treated fairly by the west"
