Last year I was surprised to find a smart new cafe open at the exit of Norwood Junction Station. I've used it a few times and it's quite pleasant. The main thing is it is not another pizza, chips, burger joint - instead it sells a range of coffees, teas (including herbal!), cakes, paninis etc.

Then, when attending the Toulouse game, on turning left into the High St., what should there be but a craft-beer "cabin". Afterwards I did wonder if I was dreaming, but, sure enough, it was still there on Monday night.

And now I see Costa have opened a new shop on the corner opposite the clock tower.

Is this the start of something?

I tried that café by the station.
The service was dreadful, so I asked to see the manager, only to be told 'I am the manager'. A young girl scarcely out of puberty.
Never again.

Now I know there is a bit more effort going into the area, I shall have to try alternatives.

You should count yourself lucky. Up here she's more likely to have said "I'm your MSP".

The idea of gentrification hitting South norwood seems ludicrous

Not being a pedant (that’ll make a change, I hear you say) but am interested in the word “throes”.

I always took this to refer to struggling with something or suffering pain or distress from something. But as HOLers often point out, a joy of the English language is that it can change and adapt.

I doubt soon. Maybe some Waitrose online delivery vans though.

Don't see it myself.

That said, it's now so rough that the only way it can go is up.

The only way I see it changes is if it has a huge increase in house prices/rents so that it's current crop of residents can no longer afford to live there.

it has good transport links and some nice housing stock but some rough locals, this is particularly prevelant after dark.

No way on earth I would let my kids loose round there and I live in Croydon!

It’ll probably be more like a mini South Croydon with it all crammed into a small area than Dulwich. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with South Croydon btw.
