Apparently Idris Elba is being considered for the next James Bond when Craig leaves. I have a couple of observations on this. Firstly currently Hollywood seems obsessed with no 'cultural appropriation' and only having people with the right ethnicity playing, what they deem the appropriate roles......Well, seeing as James Bond was written as a white bloke with Sottish and Swiss parents that files in the face of this. However, I regard the people who push that politics as t***s and I think this should be about meritocracy and purely about the acting ability and charisma. So on that score this guy is definitely someone who can do Bond. However, as we speak Idris Elba is 45 years old. This is already too old to be starting an actor on this road. Especially if Craig is doing the next movie. So personally, I think they should start him now for one or two movies at most......Craig is already too old himself and shouldn't be doing anymore. This whole thing though might just be a cheap publicity play by the producers to keep the Bond name out there.

Wasn't James Bond black in the original books? Regardless, if his change in hair colour etc over the years hasn't been an issue, his skin colour shouldn't. Way more important things for people to worry about these days

It's not just Hollywood. They recently had to recast the role of Maria in West Side Story in London as some people moaned like f*** that the actress chosen (who has played the role before) wasn't Puerto Rican, who are of course plentiful in the UK as we all know... In the end the complainers decided anyone Latino would be close enough but they've ended up replacing the American actress with a Canadian one (who has also played the role before). They were closer the first time, as Puerto Rico is at least a territory of the USA. This is a role famously played by Natalie Wood, an American of Russian descent. And it's an industry called "acting" not "replicating". The phrase "cultural appropriation" is yet another w***y modern phrase, to go with the many others some of which I see written far too often on this site. Another favourite one of late is "colourism". There was a story of a girl that had been cast to play the title character of a book. Readers/fans, or "activists" (there's another one) most likely, decried that she was too light skinned compared to the cover art and that this was "colourism". One of the chief complainers was the illustrator of the cover. When they spoke to the actual author of the book she explained that she wasn't happy with the cover art on the book, and never had been, but didn't have control over it from the publishers. She described the actress chosen as being exactly what she wrote about.

I think he would be good in that type of role but I don't know how they would square the story. Bonds history is well established, the writers would have to get creative so it made sense. I do like Idris, he's one of those actors for me that, even if the movie is a bit dodgy, he's usually good in it. I could see him with a gun in a tux but he's been concidered before and he wouldn't be my favorite. I would have liked to see a bit more of Craig in the role. He's the best bond since Mr Connery, imo. When there is a next bond, my suggestion would be the guy who plays Ragnor in Vikings, Travis Fimmel.
