Can someone with far more knowledge about this than I, please tell me how our scouting system is set up because I can see no evidence of it in action. I look at them on the South Coast who appear to identify players early, get the deal done and the next thing is that they have signed. With us the complete opposite and which is a regular occurrence. We just don't seem to be out there spotting potential gems which, means we have to rely on those touted by agents that every other similar club has notification of and accordingly waiting to the lights go dim in Aldi to hopefully get signatures with the 'hope' of getting a blinding deal. This does not help the manager in preparing his best side for the start of the season. We just don't seem to have either a mid or long term strategy when it comes to scouting/sourcing the right players that surely would be cheaper than risking last minute deals with little background knowledge. I may be completely wrong but there is little to suggest otherwise with 4 days left of the window and no signings.

We rarely seem to identify the sorts of players that other clubs of a similar size manage to bring in. Our financial situation (whatever that might be) probably plays a part, but I have felt for years that our scouting set up simply isn't up to Championship, never mind Premier League, standard.

They seem to have the Holloway approach, buy lots and hope some are any good.

This is not a 2010 excuse but when we went into administration the scouting network was completely destroyed and I suspect scouts not paid. After the gang of 4 took over it was never expanded back to its former size, hence the scatter gun approach when we joined EPL. It is probably better now but is still not as good as many clubs

How the hell did we get promoted, and how the hell did we end up with so many good players in our best 11? Not disagreeing with you but it does beg the question. Perhaps our high wage bill is an indication of the fact we mainly got these players through agents etc. Also that would explain why we have little money left to buy more.

Teams such as Wolves, Huddersfield and Brighton seem to be bringing a few players in but I must admit I have not heard of most of them. They may turn out to be diamonds or a busted flush. I'd be happy if we signed one or two of known quality if we are going to sign any at all.
