i'm looking to spend around £5-7k on a used car and wondered what I can get for my money. I just want something small but not a mini type but is also fuel efficient on the motorway. I used to stick with Toyotas but I find them really bland now Am thinking about the Golf 1.6 TDi Any suggestions?

Check out Kia Soul or equivalent - good value and very reliable, had ours for 7 years already. My Mrs is Japanese and her dad worked at Toyota all his life. He said Korean (Kia) cars are good and cheaper. Might be a bit bland for you though. Edited by premier fan (25 Jul 2018 2.09pm) Edited by premier fan (25 Jul 2018 2.09pm)

Diesels are losing popularity and it's anyone's guess how that will play out longer term. You still have the choice of diesel or a fuel efficient petrol. Or hybrids which appear to be gaining in popularity If you don't want a hybrid you can't go far wrong with Skoda Octavia or its Seat twin the Leon. They are both Golfs, just cheaper and more reliable. Or live with the shame and buy a Mark 2 Jazz, bloomin brilliant cars with an old fogey reputation. Edited by Mapletree (25 Jul 2018 5.11pm)

I'd stay away from Diesels with the news/potential new taxes on Diesels. What about a Focus/Fiesta? I love Peugeot 208s!

most car makers collaborate on designs now, to save on production costs. I just bought a Peugot 107. lots of stuff interchangeable with the Toyota Aygo.
I disengage, I turn the page. |

Almost all heavy goods transport are diesel so why are they not going after them you can clearly see they are a big problem.

Hyundai i20 (mine has gone on forever from new) or i10 (my mother-in-law’s has gone on forever from new). Experts on here will no doubt point out that there are almost identical cars in the Kia range, but I don’t know what they are.

Fiesta eco boost engine. It's got a turbo so is real nippy and is very efficient. You can get them with a sports kit, looks great. Wife has one, 5 years old and an absolute looker and goes like a rocket(so does the car!),cost 6K. IIRC it has been voted engine/car of the year a couple of times. Ollie's Dad,Ash.

The Kia equivalent is the Ceed.
