I have received a Parking Charge Notice for unauthorised parking for less than 2 hours between 8pm and 10pm.

The notice states that they follow a code of practice that states that any charge cannot be unreasonable or used as a penalty or a fine.

I live in Taunton and at that time of night, there aren't any car parks that actually charge so I'm wondering how reasonable a charge of £50 actually is.

I'm tempted to send them a cheque for a quid and see what happens.

Anyone had similar?

Don't send less than the fine if you want to pay as it will incur extra admin.
Appeal through their appeals procedure.
Stating why you think it is wrong and was wrongly issued.
At least you will know then if it is erroneous.
Whenever I get fines I appeal them as at it buys you more time to pay and the 50% discount time starts from their response date.
Nothing to lose if it's correct as you gotta pay anyway.

OK so I won't send them a quid then.

I wasn't going to officially appeal as that might recognise their legitimacy. My understanding is that this isn't a fine, its like an invoice, to get me to pay it they would have to take me to small claims court and win.

I am very willing to pay a parking charge its just that a £50 parking charge doesn't sound reasonable to me. It sounds completely reeprehensible and evilly praying on people actually.

You need to do your own research, but my understanding is that the request you’ve received is not enforceable. If it were me, I wouldn’t legitimise it by replying (and I certainly wouldn’t pay any token amount). You may however need nerves of steel should any follow-up correspondence be sent to you.

You are welcome, but I repeat that you need to do your own research rather than rely on my comments. This may help [Link]

Also, do you have any legal advice provision through your car insurance or AA/RAC etc? If so, a quick call to the legal helpline could be helpful.

You need to go back to the car park and look at their notices. Bearing in mind that you have quoted a TA1 post code it may be that the car park is useful for the station of local pubs. Also worth visiting one or two of the local meeting places, to receive comment from local people. Hope you do as well as I did - Croydon University Hospital told parking company to cancel their invoice. Good luck.

You should assume it's legitimate I reckon.
It's not like an email or phone call asking for details about you or personal info.
£50 is quite low
It's £120 in London, half if paid early.
Appeal and they may cancel it or at least you find out why you got it.
