I have had a series of PSA tests over the past two years, where the results have been edging up from 3.2 to 5.2. My previous GP told me that following three DRE examinations, that my higher readings were down to BPE and saw no value in further checks like biopsy. Have I been unnecessarily alarmed here or is my new GP giving me good advice please, from anyone out there reading this who has had similar experiences. Thanking you in anticipation.

I have been under a consultant for the last 4 years. My PSA readings were up and down from 3.6 up to 7 It was when I hit 7 My doctor referred me to a consultant at our local hospital. After seeing the consultant for 2 years my PSA readings were going higher so I went for a MRI scan. This showed a growth on my prostrate and an enlarged Lymph node. I was booked in straight away for a Biopsy to be done. The Biopsy showed that the growth was in fact benign. I now have a PSA test now every 3 months to keep a check on things and I will not need to go back to the consultant until my PSA levels go nearer to 8. The last 3 test have ranged between 5.2 and 3.6. so variations there are. Personally, prostrate cancer caused my dads death and with this problem you need to keep a check on it.

Having experienced more than my fair share of GPs over the last few years, I've come to the conclusion that most of them are f*cking useless, incapable of even the most basic diagnoses and too quick to punt pretty much everything that is outside their experience/knowledge (which, again, seems to be pretty much everything) to the local hospital. Overworked my arse.

Overworked my arse. Halle-feckin-lullah to that. Most of them are far too concerned about their private patients to give a toss about the NHS peasants too, although we've paid for their training. I've always said that animals get treated better, and vets train longer than doctors.

My previous GP was very familiar with psa readings and prostate problems and having carried out 3 dre's over an 18 month period was clear in his opinion that I had a prostate enlargement and nothing more. My new GP,a relatively young doctor has disregarded my previous doctors judgment, even though my psa test last week fell back to it's lowest level in 18 months, making an urgent appointment next week for an mri scan. Regards.

Yes my consultant offered me the choice to have or not to have the biopsy and I refused it as I did not want to disturb the growth,, but after 2 years we decided on the mri and then the biopsy. At least my mind is at rest now but of course that could all change. Good luck
