So rather than keep his promise to his constituents, Boris is hiding away in a foreign country to avoid having to vote against the Government on expansion.

You really can't trust a single word he says.

In terms of Heathrow I would bulldoze the airport and build new housing and a new town centre. Would create tons of new jobs, help London's housing issue and remove the blight of planes flying low over thousands of homes and schools in West London and improve residents' health.

I'd then go for a brand new Thames estuary airport which could operate 24/7 with new fast connections into central London (not Paddington), 4 to 7 runways (Amsterdam has 7), and again would generate huge amounts of work and business. Could incorporate dedicated freight terminals and runway as well.

The choice between Heathrow and Gatwick was ridiculous as well. They should do both. We're way behind other major European cities in terms of capacity and need both runways.

Another huge infrastructure project delayed and totally mismanaged by the government and BoJo is an embarrassment and his constituents deserve someone who cares about someone other than himself.

It's gone through inquiry after inquiry and the result has been the same.

Expansion of Heathrow is the best option.

The scheme had been delayed by two decades and resulted in huge extra costs and lost opportunity due to petty nimbyism and political point scoring.

It seems like your agenda is to critise Boris and has very little to do with the engineering, environmental, and social impact.

I like your thinking. Of course if Boris can oust Theresa and become PM we may well see Boris Island.

I don't have strong feelings either way on Heathrow I do think it fair to say that if we were starting from scratch you would not build an airport there however we have and capacity in the south east is a major issue.

Boris is wrong to miss the vote as he was a vocal opponent. As I mentioned on another thread it is ridiculous that MPS have to vote in person. At elections we have postal voting and we can even nominate someone to cast our vote (proxy). Surely Parliament can come up with something better. I thing most of us believe Boris is hiding if he could vote remotely he would have to be accountable to his constituents.

Boris is massively in favour of the Thames Estuary airport. I just think his hiding from this vote is worthy of criticism.

I've read plenty of analyses of the options and the decisions but I disagree that Heathrow only expansion is the right decision social, environmentally or economically. It doesn't do enough and is hugely disruptive and not value for money. The fact it's taken this long to make a decision is ridiculous.

Should never have been a straight Gatwick vs Heathrow decision. Discounting the biggest and most ambitious (and best IMO) option was short sighted and lacked imagination or vision. Real opportunity wasted.

I liked the idea of Boris island.....but it isn't a topic I know enough about.

You would hope that the people at the top were bright enough to make sensible decisions.

They should do both Heathrow and Gatwick so neither could moan that it wasn't fair.

Knocking it all down and starting again would be monumentally daft.

He's the foreign secretary, if anyone is going to be out of the country often it's them. Beside the fact that "the bulldozers aren't there to lie down in front of" as if anyone ever believed that to begin with.

He's not voting in favour of it is he?

Where is the evidence of that?

It wasn't a Gatwick v Heathrow decision. Gatwick had a 50 year covenant stopping it from building a new runway which expires next year so options have only been considered relatively recently.

You probably new that bit of basic information as you have read loads.

It's always surprising that in a supposed meritocracy that we don't have the brightest at the top levels. They just aren't always attracted to these fields. Perhaps it's because they want to be genuinely useful in life....or maybe more truthfully most of them want to make more money.

I wonder what the average IQ is at the various levels.

That's what I thought at the time, the capacity will be needed at some point may as well get on with it.

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

There both private companies, they have to propose the expansion but require planning permission from the government.

Gatwick is more than likely for more runways next year, Manchester and/or Stansted are likely to follow.
