He wrote them while at Everton but probably didn't make the wisest choice of club to move to having done so.

A spokesperson for the Football Association said: "We were made aware of the allegations and investigated. We wrote to the player last month to warn him about his future conduct."

Didn't Andre Gray get banned for doing the same at his previous club, which was also from many years before? And he was at a non-league team rather than a PL one.

Can only imagine their reaction if it was a Palace player

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I don't actually see it as that big of a deal. I wrote plenty of unpleasant things as a teenager. Plus he's apologised so I don't think it should be held against him.

The annoying thing is the club claiming to have a "zero tolerance approach", yet when it's a first team player they "draw a line under it" after a simple apology. I imagine such tweets from one of their fans or opposition fans would result in lifetime bans as part of their "zero tolerance approach". Homophobia shouldn't be tolerated and it's a joke that the weed are complete hypocrites on this matter. Joke club.

Oh my God, he called him a "thing". Oh my God!! Let's ban him!!!

God, I hate these feminists, LGBTs and black people who victimise themselves. Nobody can be loved by everyone, get over it! I've had slurs at me because I was fat and I didn't get any defence on social media and nobody was banned for calling me "fat" all my childhood.

What do you expect them to do. The tweets were made six years ago when he was an Everton player.

The reactions are completely over the top with Peter Tatchell's comments being particularly stupid

I'm not trying to lynch him, just saying that there are some double standards being applied.

Both by the FA and, as others have pointed out, by the club he is now at.

I expect them to be consistent with their approach. They've decided to effectively brush this under the carpet simply because he's a player. If he were a fan he would be getting a banning order or referred to do some work in the community or something.

They could easily have made Duffy do some work for Stonewall or Kick it Out or some local community group who aim to raise awareness of the pernicious nature of homophobia and the damage it does to people.

They could have asked him to make a financial donation as well.

My issue is not their response but their hypocrisy in saying they have a zero tolerance attitude and then tolerating it when it suits them.

I agree. If they didn't make such a point of not tolerating homophobia (I agree with that stance) then their actions would be consistent with their policies. The point is they have made a big deal out of it, but the minute it's one of their own players it's all OK as he previously apologised.

Those people you mentioned can't help being black, gay or women. You could have eaten a bit less or done some exercise. I wouldn't suggest for a minute it was OK to bully you, but you can't for a minute claim that homophobia isn't a problem or that people who object to it should "chill out" because no one is standing up for fat people. That's ridiculous.

Black people, women and gay people have to contend with more than enough victimisation without having you and others pretend that they bring it on themselves or make it up.

Duffy clearly in the wrong and Brighton clearly two-faced on this issue. Shame on them both.

Yep. Almost every single manager, player and pundit states that "all we want is consistency" when it comes to refereeing.

What's good for the goose and all that.
