So the last couple of months we've gone for a 442 with 4 central midfielders and zaha and Townsend up top, unbeaten in our last 6, finishing top of the form league. If it's not broke then don't fix it, what do people think, will roy stick to this system next season ? My thoughts are we have a cheaper alternative to benteke In sorloth and the club would be willing to offload benteke to invest in other areas of the squad. Chelsea will probably price us out of loftus cheek so if we play this system, 2 players that would be perfect to go for would be shaqiri and Moses. Shaqiri would be a cheaper alternative to cheek and Moses would be perfect playing on the right. Without the ball we could leave Townsend up top and let zaha drop back on the left in a 5 man midfield and when we have the ball imagine how terrified the opposition would be with zaha, shaqiri, Townsend and Moses running at them.

I think Roy's ideal would be a proper striker over Townsend. Zaha has proved he can play that position just as effectively as the wing but Townsend has seemed more make shift. It's also worth remembering that McCarthur and Loftus Cheek have been playing converted wingers which really isn't natural at all. So could have a midfield 2 of Luka and McCarthur, wingers of Townsend and Sako and strikers of Zaha and our new superstar striker who will bang in 34 league goals, ruining the Salah record.

I am not convinced that Shaqiri would put in the hard yards when we don't have the ball.

Always wary of rumours of players having a “bad attitude” or being “lazy”. A lot of the time these players go missing simply because they’re playing in an advanced position and the rest of their team is s***. Would take a punt on him in a heartbeat. His quality on the ball is undeniable.
We're the Arthur over ere! |

However, not sure if Wilf is as effective in a standard 442 - has struggled there a bit and most of his goals have been scored when Benteke hasn't played

Roy seems very keen on the fluid 4-4-2. I can imagine Townsend moving back to the wing with a nippy new striker partnering Wilf up top.

Odds on we will probably lose Cabaye and RLC. Our formation will therefore depend on who we can bring to replace them. Edited by Brinscall Eagle (15 May 2018 4.21pm)

I think we want more than one system and which we employ most should depend on the personnel avaialable Yes the 4-4-2 has worked well over the past few games but that has been against weaker teams where we have had most of the possession. When we are pressed back we need an out ball and Zaha and Townsend aren't going to be effective at that. Also, at least in our last two games, we didn't score until Benteke came on Personally, I think we should look at 3 at the back as an option. I love PVA appearing on the right hand side of the opponent's box to score goals but it does leave us more vulnerable defensively. Both he and AWB are more natural wing-backs Assuming we are losing Cabaye and the loan players I'd like to see this as an option Goaly AWB Luka McArthur PVA Townsend Zaha Benteke/Wickham Ideally, upgrades for Townsend(Ings/Barkley) and McArthur but they would suffice and along with Schlupp, No2 Goaly, Kelly, Ward/Riedewald and Wickham/Benteke would give us a much stronger bench
