"Tax on pensioners proposed to heal inter-generational divide"

"It says that all young people should receive a £10,000 windfall at the age of 25 to help pay for a deposit on a home, start a business or improve their education or skills."

Flawed solution to a real problem. Some pensioners continue to work because they are still paying off their mortgage or other debts including their children's. So they are to be penalised. Meanwhile some pensioners have a good income and don't need to work and they don't have to pay.

It is the same flawed solution to making pensioners pay for their care by taxing their estate when they die. I am retired and have lots of friends who have no savings and live in rented accommodation. For them it was a lifestyle choice, they earned good money and chose to P*** it up against the wall. I choose to buy my home but now I will be penalised whilst they get a freebie.

Don't kept me wrong I am willing to pay my share but so should other people unless you are poor. The only fair solution is to increase income tax so we all pay when we earn, after that we can save or spend as we see fit.

So, the only fair solution is to tax someone else? I’ve heard that one before.

I have some sympathy with pensioners, it must be difficult knowing you’ve had your last pay packet, so it makes sense to want to protect your nest egg.

But the fact remains there are many wealthy pensioners nowadays who should be paying more. I’d suggest we need much better means-testing to sort who should pay more.

Why should they pay more? They've been paying all their lives.

I guess that I come within your idea of a wealthy pensioner but a huge chunk of my income already goes to HMRC in the form of income tax. Do you expect me to pay even more?

Indeed !

I am a pensioner but in a fortunate position. There are vast swathes who just live off their monthly pension and find it hard to make ends meet.Ludicrous proposal and not likely to be Government policy.

By way of clarity, they have paid tax all their life and got public services back in return. Why should they now pay no tax but still enjoy the same services IF (big if) they can afford to pay as much as someone in the working population?

What has chronology got do do with anything?

As a PS, you are aware that recently the average income for pensioners passed the average income for the waged?

My point is that, having paid tax all their lives, it seems a ridiculous notion that they should now have to pay more just to stick ten grand in the back pockets of kids, a luxury they themselves were not afforded.

I can't see this vote loser ever coming into being as whichever party introduces it will lose the next election.

I'm also blowed if I am going to pay extra tax just so that some 25 year old knife wielding drug dealer can have a bonus courtesy of me
