Standard of referees this year

I can perhaps understand that all teams will pull one or two poor refereeing displays per season and you have to accept that sometimes they get it wrong. However this season, there appears to have been a litany of penalties denied, inappropriate bookings against our players and bottled decisions on second yellow cards for serial foulers. I am sure that other teams may feel similarly aggrieved, perhaps not, but I can only comment on Palace matches as they are the ones I watch consistently.

Is the standard of refereeing getting worse? Is the game getting too fast for refs to keep up now?

Secondly, no English refs at the World Cup appears to be a bit of a damning indictment of the state of refereeing in our country. Do we think the governing body for refs feel the same way as we do about the standard in the Premier League?

Finally, what is the answer to this? Two refs on the pitch like basketball perhaps, one in front of the play and one behind so that there should always be a decent view of an incident or maybe better use of video evidence? Or maybe we just study the best refs in the world and work out why they are not coming from the Premier League? I don't have the answers, happy to listen to what people think.

There has been a big team bias for a number of years. I wouldn't know how to solve the problems but I firmly believe this got worse when the Premier League started controlling their own refs. I genuinely wonder if they are briefed to 'make the game entertaining' - which may explain the constant controversy somewhat.

The fact that no British referee has been selected to officiate at the World cup is a damning inditement of how poor our officials have become. The sooner we use VAR for all games and decisions the sooner the bias and incompetence will be eliminated.

Just a side point about the world cup:

The reason why there is no English Ref is because each nation chooses their potential reps 2 years in advance.

The English FA chose Clattenburg who probably would have gone. However last year when he moved to Saudi Arabia this became void. The FA were not allowed to pick a replacement.

This is the reason, its not to do with quality

Just to pile on to the above poster this has already been pointed out on multiple occasions in other threads. Its Fifa rules and Clatttenburg dropping England in it. Having said that I don't think much of our current crop anyway.

Yet your chairman along with a number of others including ours I suspect rejected the idea of VAR coming in and ruining the game as a spectacle with the fear it would stop the flow of the game etc...

I actually agree with you that in some cases VAR would have beeen very useful if controlled correctly (so players and managers couldn't put pressure on refs to use it for anything) and the comminication between fans and the officials was as it is rugby/cricket.

But the clubs refused to bring VAR in so really can we complain if another ref makes a bad error with only one quick look in real time?

Sadly we as fans don't appear to be trusted to sit and wait for a call to be made without causing a riot whilst my main fear was we'd end up with refs under even more pressure to give decisions by using this VAR system from players etc.

It works in Rugby League and doesn't detract from the game, Decisions are fast and the atmosphere is more intense than most football matches, Palace included.

I would prefer a season of VAR, and if it doesn't work revert back to Refs and lines people
